So I have just got a full HD television, was about to buy an HD media player, but thought with PS3's massive jailbreak around the corner, will it support HD media playback?

Need to convert the movies , since PS3 does not support mkv till yet.

Or use PS3 media server

^Sahil, run them through MKV2VOB, split into 4GB chunks and copy them onto a FAT32 drive.

Or just transfer through PS3 Media Server.

It might be in the works but otherwise no. Either you will have to convert them into VOB files or you will have to use the PS3 media server like TH suggested.

PS: What TV?

^^ The Samsung 40C530 even with the AAxx serial number, the picture quality looked sharper compared to the LG one, hence bought it :)

^Your TV would probably play HD rips in MKV format.

I bought the Samsung 40" LED C5000 last month and I'm able to play MKV files of any size on it (it even played an 18GB rip of Minority Report) :D

Excellent! Like I said before, PQ wise this is how I'd rate the panels - SPVA>AMVA>SMVA~IPS.

Now why do you ask whether the PS3 offers playback of hd-rips when your TV is capable of doing that? :D

Plug a hard drive and see it for yourself. :)

A HDTV directly playing MKV rips? WOW! I think it has now spiked my urge to get an LCD too. What are the damages?

Huh is it, havent give it a shot, will try tonite. Thanks to you and doc for suggesting the TV :)

In any case my bro wants the PS3 badly, hence would be buying that in a month. I was in favor of X360, but my neighbor has one, and have played almost all major titles...

Ethan: I bought it for 48k from Vijay Sales, I think I could have shaved off 1k more at Croma, but was tired of the to-fros that day :P

Not a problem Sahil! I am glad I could be of help. :)

Had you opted for the C550 or the C630 and above, the TV comes with a ethernet port, connect it to your PC/router/NAS and you can stream all the data from the system and the TV plays it. Occasionally I have experienced some formats not being supported. Very occasionally mind you!

Wake up my friend! They have been here since almost a year now. :P

It has been sometime I have watched something on my good old 24" Dell display now. If it has got anything to do with .avi, .wmv, .mkv, all I do is plug in a pen drive or a hard drive, transfer the contents and watch it on the TV. :D

Wow, now why dint they include this feature before!! It would hardly increase cost for them.. In any event I hope the HD rips I have play on the TV or atleast later on the PS3. Else I will need to drag my main PC into the living room, and get a new Sandy Bridge :P
