Three years back a relative got a 80GB Seagate SATA drive installed by a 'computer shop' on Hill Road Bandra.

They got a new PC so I was copying files from the old hdd to the new one when I saw "refurbished, recertified" printed on the label of the hdd.

I've never really checked the label on a hdd before. Possible that drives sold are 'refurbished, recertified' ?

when u replace a drive you get usually a refurbished drive. so mostly it should be a one off case of the shopkeeper selling a drive which came back from repairs as a new one.

I know 2 shops in hillroad, bandra. One is relatively a new one and the other one is called desktop computers. They also sell second hand items if the buyer want second items. I dealt with them before for a really long time so I had no such issues.

Yes, and it's not a problem. First, it helps keep a lot of junk out of landfills. Second, the drive is warranted for the full period. One of my first expereinces was with a 20GB Barracuda that was clearly marked as factory recert (I got it a a real good price). That drive is still working perfectly fine in the PC (I sold the whole thing) - it will be 8 years old this August.

People are advised to get the machine assembled under supervision of an technically informed person.

I have seen shopkeepers selling c2d n instead giving dual cores. for an average joe its just the processor speed that matters n 'pentium' is still the Latest offering from 'The Only' cpu manufacturer....so BEWARE!!

shopkeeper is not allowed to sell refurbished products at brand new product price.

The point is we had not asked for a non-new hdd. So the shop - yes, it is Desktop Computers, the guys name is Flav - should have given us a new hdd. He also charged us for a new hdd.

Also, why does Seagate release these drives without a "loud and clear" label/warning. Do they actually believe a dealer or assembler is going to tell a customer they are getting a non-new hdd.

btw : the exact wording is "Certified Repaired HDD".

Small shops get their stuff from sub distributors and sub distributors get stuff from main distributors. I am not sure but there are situations that blaming it all on dealers is not exactly a right move.

However in this case....

True- they should have checked the hard drive before installing it whether its a brand new or a refurbished one as not all users are technically sound/check if the hard drive is refurb or not. They ARE technically sound and do know they are doing. They are not just into retail, but also repairs and installation so it wouldn't have taken much time and effort to see. If you see in retailers point of view as well, they dont check if it says refurbished/repaired sticker on it. Its best to check things properly before buying/making payment/taking the bill irrespective if a buyer is reputed/technically sound or not.

Unfortunatly now the issue is that it is discovered after 3 years so its obvious that exchange from them is out of the question. The only option I see visible here is if the hard drive is NOT working properly, get it RMAed and keep fingers crossed that you get a brand new piece.

If you paid new price, you've been cheated. The refurbs are sold at a lower price, and that discount should be passed to you, so you need to ask for your money back.

did this relative of yours drive a hard bargain at the place where he got it assembled? Sometimes when buyers bargain for lower prices, some installers have been known to do these things to give them the stuff they want at a lower price....

And most of the ppl would'nt even note these things ..

I don't think the average consumer even would have noted the 'Recertified' label in the HDD... You saw it only when the techie was assembling, right?

If it was in the covered cabby, nobody would've noticed it. :(

You have all the rights, to go to the shop and question him..

"Certified Repaired HDD" is sumthin one gets as a replacement for the faulty drive.

mayb seller got is as a replacement.

check the warranty on the manufacturer's site using the serial number on the drive...if its 4-.5-5yrs from date of purchase then its not a cheat...
