Graphic Cards Does the Nvidia 8200M Suffer from Overheating/Premature failure?

We all know about the scandal which rocked nvidia when we found out that their G84/G86 chips were prone to failure.

Now I've almost decided on the 8200M , but the ghost of all those Inq stories is haunting me.

The chip is different ( listed as MCP79MVL) . Googling for 8200M Overheating gives answers both ways.

I'm getting a cooler anyway, but if anyone knows whether the 8200M is on a short trip to hardware hell, let me know :P
 
The chip in question is a mobile gpu chip.

This particular chip is there in my laptop , the Msi CR-400x.

I have been using my laptop for gaming(very very occasional gaming) and for frequent hd--1080p playback and have not seen any heating/overheating issues and i live,work and travel in one of the hottest cities in the country, Ahmedabad. The temperature in my room usually is 35 degrees and the laptop manages about 50-55 degrees with regular usage. If you want to increase the longevity of your laptop do consider getting a good laptop cooling pad.

As for the chipset - you will be covered under two years of warranty if you buy the MSI laptop (i guess this is what you are considering) and the guys at the service center will replace your motherboard if the chipset were to fail (which i doubt) within 72 hours so don't worry about chipset failures and warranty issues.
 
Nvdia gpu issue as it was called ... was primarly on the 7 series mobile chips, there are some 8 series which do get overheated but not to the extent the 7 series did, you can safely buy it .... i do use 8600M on my laptop and been using it for almost 3 years without a problem. I also know for a fact since i worked with Dell some time back that chips that are affected by the said issue had a extended 5 year warranty for the said issue for free. So you can buy it without any worries.
 
If ur gettin a laptop with this card, drop it, the 8xxx cards are a trip to hell, i hav 8400m on my laptop, and twice the mobo has been changed.. Thank god for dell complete cover!

There are many new cards, why go for this obsolete one? My laptop of 2007 has this card and even then it was relatively old..
 
i think its marginally better, and handles smoke grenades in CS better.
plus the lappy is also nice :D
 
the issue is not with overheating but the large delta temperature which causes failure. If the GPU temp is 75 C and then 60 in next 2-3 mins and this repeats then these gpu fail. I had my dell laptop motherboard replaced 3 times due to this. The final fix was a bios fix which would throttle the fan to make these delta changes less volatile. It works fine as of now but if the system is more hot than normal :/
 
The MCP79 doesnt have the bump-crack issue. Its infact the same chip that is used in the previous gen Macbooks (prolly with a few shaders disabled and lower clocks). Btw, can you link to the model that you are buying?
 
the MSI Cr400x. there is a review by sunny27 elsewhere. checked it out. Its cheap, and build quality is head and shoulders above the cheaper inspirons ( and I think dells look dreadfully cheap& common) while this has a nice metal (almost unibody) construction.

only downside is that its a bit heavy
 
@ greenhorn the msi weighs only 2kg whereas the dell/acer/toshiba weigh a lot more!!
 
i dunno. when i tried picking them up at the local showroom, the msi felt well built but heavy, while the inspirons felt light and plasticky
 
the msi weighs 2kg with the battery as per the website and the specs sheet i got with my laptop.
 
At wat price, wats the config? At abt 35k with complete cover, you'l hav a laptop that you can virtually throw around and not hav to care abt too much for 3yrs..well beyond any post grad coll duration..
Things get replaced at a single call...

Plus you'l hav a present generation graphics card..
 
The need for a graphics card is just a potential one.

plus i dont need too much muscle. something to run cstrike at 640x480 smoothly is all I need :) , and too much will eat up battery

look & feel are a dealbreaker for me :ashamed: , and the inspirons just dont cut it
