I am seeing some really cheap deals for WD 1.5TB black on Newegg, am thinking of ordering one. But does WD have international warranty, and whats the price of 1.5TB black drive in India? Its 100 USD with shipping there...

I think so, because I was able to RMA my 2.5" laptop HDD purchased from China without any issues but even there is international warranty. I would advise to stay away from WD as their RMA in india is bad.

I doubt if international warranty is applicable since I tried entering the serial number of a drive just now and a different country (US, China, Sri Lanka, UAE etc) and verified the status. It said 'Out of Region' and had a link to the reason - WD Support > Warranty Status Explanation

@Gaurish: Was your drive purchased from China? Which year was it purchased?

Sahil, I'd say avoid all those hassles and get a Seagate 1.5TB drive locally. Retails for 4500 INR. A WD drive costs as much but there seems to be a lot of failures associated with the WD 1.5TB and 2TB drives so I'd advise against WD for the moment.

when i wanted to purchase WDTV...i wanted my bro who stays in US to get one..but had the same doubt and wanted to know abt warranty....i had called up WD toll number and spoke to the executive.

he said that if the product is purchased from neplace outside india...first u will have to write an email to WD INDIA with the details of product(i.e date and place of purchase) and ask them to transfer the warranty from that place to India and after that u will avail warranty in india.

Yes, i got same message when I tried to RMA but still I called their toll free number and generate an RMA.didn't tell them anything about being purchased in china. they asked for Drive serial number and to my surprise; they said drive is in warranty and generated a RMA. few days after I had a new HDD:D

Yes, brought from China. purchase data was something in 2008.

I bought a WD HD tv from singapore and placed a request via email to change the region code to INDIA based on the suggestion by CC. Immediate response and now i enjoy local warranty.... WD rocks in this aspect but the only negative part is, those a******s havent released any firmware since Nov '09 which is very essential as there are some sync issues with certain formats...

If its refurbished..newegg would be giving 180 days or 90 days warranty only on the HDD...

And that too would be applicable in US only.

Can you share the link with us ??

WD does have international warranty .I purchased mine 500GB external in India and was able to claim warranty in New Zealand :)

I suppose then WD does have International Warranty except that we may have to write to WD to have it transferred to India. That's great. Aces, look no further then. Just ensure that the shipping charges to India and the customs do not kill the offer. :

@spimmer - I suppose you have backups. I recently faced the wrath when my netbook's internal 500GB 2.5" drive gave up. I did not have the backup of the 100GB odd torrent file I was downloading. >_<

I should be buying a couple of 2TB drives to backup my HD rips' collection. :ashamed:
