I am planning to get a .in domain for a site.

1) What should I look out when purchasing a domain?

2) .in domains don't support Whoisguard right.
So what are the steps should I take in order to protect the sensitive information.

3) I am planning to pay through eBanking, any dealers I have to consider?
So far planning to get it from mitsu.

4) Is it possible to buy for 'n' no of years in one go or not.

5) Also what is better?

Linking a Wordpress blog from wordpress or installing wordpress on a server and running the site from there.
What are the pros and cons.

1. Well, the main thing is to look at the provider. Don't end up buying from some cheap provider. Orefer Go Daddy, Name Cheap, Mitsu etc.

2. I'd say take WHOIS guard if possible.

4. Yes

5. You can go for n no. of years, but personally I won't recommend that, though there is no problem at all. If you are sure about your future prospects you can always do that. BTW here n can be max 3 years I guess.

1. Yes, as Krishnandu said, go for a good established provider. You can checkout Dynadot.com, Name.com etc. They have good pricing for renewals as well.

2. The .in registry do not support Whois privacy options. But you are required to give valid details in the whois.

3. If you want to pay through netbanking, the list of registrars will be limited to Indian companies. I personally don't prefer an Indian company, last time I tried BigRock.in they took 4 days to verify and register a domain! There may be other companies but almost all of them will be resellers from ResellerClub.

4. Yes you can very well do that, I think you can register for 10 years+ depending on the registrar. If you are serious about the domain then there is no problem in doing that.

5. IMO running Wordpress from your own hosting account will be better, you get full control over the site and can make whatever changes you require. And I think Wordpress charges you extra if you want to use your own domain, not sure though.

1. Choose
Bigrock
Enom/Name.com/buy it from znetlive.in (my friend purchases domains from them)

2. .in Domains Don't have Privacy Protect as it is Registrar's Policy.

3. If you are planning to buy at Bigrock, They have CCavenue Payment Gateway on their website.

4. Yes minimum 1 Year and maximum 10years.

5.Installing Wordpress on other Servers .. you have own resources space and bandwidth. I haven't Hosted on wordpress servers!

Everything is mentioned above. All I would say is you can book a domain for maximum of 10 years and every year you can renew for another year. Which means you cannot have a domain valid for more than 10 years.

As for payment, if you pay via NetBanking, you must know that until any provider receives money in his account, the domain will not be registered. So, if you pay via Net Banking, be ready to wait for atleast 2 days. If you pay using Debit Card, the domain will be registered instantly. I hope that clears your doubts. As for godaddy, namecheap, they won't even accept Indian Debit cards. You would require Credit Card to book domain there.

Let me know if you need any help.

Godaddy is the best.

Most accept creditcards.

Installing wordpress is better.

Yes you can buy for multiple years at one go. Not a problem!

Everything as mentioned as above. Bigrock with a debit card is easy and fast. Taking the domain is not a big task . Selecting a Host is a greater problem. Do your own install of wordpress . In future if you want to change some base code of wordpress you can do that. Dont commit too many years with a company because their policies may change or you may see a better offer else where.

Thanks for the input guys.

Gonna talk with the folks regarding .com or .in. Price aint the problem, but .in really meant a g8 deal for them. But they wanted to keep off the spammers, hence the trouble.

Wordpress on the server was my choice too. Though I have to streamline certain issues for making them feel comfortable. Right now free hosts, maybe next year we will think of shared hosts.

Right now gonna pay for a year as rightfully pointed out by challapradyumna, company's policies may change causing trouble.

Domain Registrars:

Whom do I get it from?

Mitsu

Bigrock

I personally like namecheap...Can someone clarify whether they accept Debit Cards

If not, which one should I go Mitsu or Bigrock ? I am confused.

Bigrock is the best option for debitcards.

Not Good with support. All dumb people are in their company. Bigrock offers a domain for Rs 475 If you shell out 520 you can buy domains from others.

^ +1

I paid for a domain through netbanking and everything was fine until the last step which displayed just a blank page. Checked my mail and there was a mail from Bigrock itself saying they have received the payment along with the transaction ids etc. But domain didn't get registered.

Mailed them and they kept on saying they didn't receive any payment when they are the ones who sent me a mail saying they got the payment. Tried a lot to make them understand but didn't work.

Finally after 2-3 days they really received the payment or something and registered the domain. :-P

Seriously bunch of idiots!
