Suppose I register a domain XYZ.com with Registrar 1...
3 yrs later or whatever, I have to renew it. Do I necessarily HAVE to go to Registrar 1 again, or can I go to Registrar 2? IE can I change registrars?
ok.. this is a stupid ques.. But how do i register a domain name & how much does it cost..? & if i just get it registered & not put up a actual website; will it expire or something..??
Post1: No you dont have to go to same registrar again. Infact you can change your registrar as many time you want. You can change 7 providers in 7 days. However with each renewal you get extra one year or whatever added to your previous time period. SO after switching 7 times you have 7 years of vailidity provided you take the one year plan each time.
Alright this is an exaggeration to explain the point. The thing is that you can change your domain provider as many times as you like. However the domain should be at least 60 days old, i.e. you have to wait 2 months before you can reshift. There are other restriction/recommendation terms by ICANN which must be looked into before thinking of transferring. http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm
POST2: I am not sure if I am the admin right now but here I am.
POST3: You can buy it from a domain name provider for 7-10 $. I bought TE for 495 from net4domains.com. No it remains valid for the time period whether you put up a site or not.
POST5: ???
Well it is recommended to get the hosting and domain from different providers so that you dont risk both with the same provider, in terms of security and support both.
A person with a config such as yours should not compromise on the features. So for heavy duty provider which gives you loads of options go for enom.com. The domain is yours for 30$ only.
Well the reason for it being so costly is not the features mainly but coz it is a direct provider and not a reseller like most of the others.
If you shall ever need support OR would need to go dedicated or VPS stay away from net4domains.
This recent TE downtime was courtesy N4D.
Now I am moving the domain over to godaddy or namecheap. Both are equally good and let you do lots of things yourself.
Incidentally there is no best reseller/registrar, learnt the hard way. Find one which best suits you.
