I was looking in the market for a PDA phone and thats the reason I recently ditched my Amazing N73 Music edition. Its not that it was a bad phone, but as days have passed by, priorities change and hence I needed a fully functional PDA.
Now why carry 2 devices then? Thats the reason I wanted to go for a PDA phone.

The obvious first choice around here is SE P990. Its A great phone. But I have used it and it was simply a turn off for me.

Then I stumbled upon this phone. Did some research on Internet and picked it up.

Now some of you must be wondering why in this world I bough a phone which was released 18 months back. Well, I will answer your queries along the way.

Lets start.

untitled.JPG

[BREAK=Whats in the box]

The package is complete. It includes everything you need except the expansion cards.
It includes following thing.

Software CD
Phone
Belt Pouch
Stereo headphones with handsfree
Charger
Usb Datacable
Manual
Spare Stylus
Battery
Quick start guide
[BREAK=Phone Specifications.]

Weight: 148 gms
Now some of you must be wondering why there is * mark in red next to O.S?

Now this is one of the reasons I chose this phone. This phone has great homebrew support with plenty of coders creating custom ROM for this phone.
This is basically HTC Prophet OEM phone. And there are plenty of custom cooked Windows Mobile 6 ROMs available for this phone which makes it very attractive purchase. Its not that Windows Mobile 5 is bad, or this phone is crap with stock OS. This is not the case. Windows Mobile 6 is not radically different from WM5. But it has fewer memory leaks and there are ROMs available which makes this phone much better in terms of both speed and feature set.
Over the time features like A2DP, Crossbow and Touch interface has been added making this device much fun to use and also give it better interface to work with.
Its very easy to update the ROMs and just googling for it will give you all the info you need.

[BREAK=The Phone]

Now lets have a look at the phone itself.

The phone is not big, it does not feel like a brick in hand like P990. Its slick, its light enough and you can actually fit it in pocket if you want.
The package includes the belt pouch as well.
The front has Touch screen, dial, disconnect, direction, select and 4 soft keys which can be programmed.

On the right side of phone, it has irda and power buttons as well as the stylus.
On the left side, it has camera, communication manager and volume buttons.

The top of the phone has expansion slot for SD and MMC cards(hot swappable ).
Bottom has miniusb and 2.5mm stereo headphone/mic jack.

Back has the 2 MP camera, self portrait mirror and a plug to connect external antenna.

[BREAK=Using the Phone]

Its a windows phone. And honestly you will feel right at home. In some of the pics above you can see my custom interface.
This is custom Windows Mobile 6 rom installed on phone and according to personal choice you can select the items you want on your today screen ( basically desktop of the PDA ).
I have selected weather, clock, user info, calander and tabbed interface with shortcut application launcher which allows me to launch certain programs right from the desktop.

Almost everything is same as windows. Navigation is easy, its smooth and there are plenty of 3rd party applications available for this platform including CPU overclocking tools ( Now tell me what else would I need :P )

I have at the moment loaded some freewares media player and data management tools available free of cost on net to make this phone more productive.

Camera is not great. Its standard 2MP camera. Gives decent output in daylight. Its not autofocus. But on the back the chrome ring around the lens has 2 settings. Macro and distant. Macro makes it focus nearer to the lens.

I got A2DP working fine with my friend's Motorola A2DP headset which sounded great.
With free 3rd party music apps like TCPMP, media playback is flawless and audio quality is as good as it gets on any phone I have ever used.
TCPMP has full graphic equalizer. There are many other options as well but I like this one as its small, works great and its free.

Here are some of the GUI screenshots.

[BREAK=Conclusion]

So, how is this phone?
Well its not perfect. It has weak CPU, that does not hamper its functionality much but more powerful CPU would be nice to have. But even recently launched HTC touch has exact same hardware under its hood, so its not much to complain about.
Its compact, looks decent, productivity is limited by the user's imagination only.
Great homebrew support. Runs windows mobile 6 flawlessly and in most cases better than WM5.
Battery life is decent for PDA. Easily lasts me whole day with heavy use which includes running wifi, bluetooth, video and audio files, few presentations.
Its easy to sync with Microsoft outlook.
Camera is not great but you dont expect great camera on PDA phone in this price range.

Approx Price with bill and warranty is near to 21K in Indian market from what I have inquired so far.

With bill, P990i is 19.5k.

So big question comes to mind. Is it worth it?
Coming from P990 user, it is. It does not have qwerty keyboard which is somewhat a downer for this phone, but overall on functionality and homebrew front, this is great purchase. Grey market price will be considerably lower than official price.
So if you are looking for a good windows mobile phone, this is great option for everyone.

Nice review Funky, great price too...

Only killer seems to be the somewhat meagre 200Mhz proccy on this, doubt if it'll handle video playback at 30fps on QVGA.

Actually it handles video playback nicely. Also there are tools available in the WM6 customized rom to overclock the cpu for certain app.

With TCPMP the video playback is smooth and flawless. I have loaded few episodes of TV serial on this and playback is not an issue.

@Anish : I have taken this upto 272Mhz without issue using the ocing tool bundled with PDAVIET 4.0.0.4 ROM :P

The PDA becomes super fast at those speeds. Does not even get warm :P

But honestly you dont really need that much speed for most of the apps. Maybe when you are playing some high res video file which is not encoded to suit pocket pc you will need more mhz and using skype. And you can set the cpu to oc only when running specific apps.

I will put the details and screenies tomorrow if i get time or on sunday.

Nice Review there Funky.

Gr8 abt dopod

- WM OS

- 802.11g

- less bulkier than 990i

- EDGE

But some how i am completely satisfied with the P990i as i feel the only adv

of dopod is WM OS and 802.11g [P990i has 802.11b]

Adv of P990i over this

- Full qwerty keypad

- autofocus

- Front Cam for video conferencing.

- Loads of s/w for the UIQ [though this aint a adv as dopod also has huge list of s/w's]

Can u share some pics taken with this phone.

I wish dopod had autofocus and flash with a front cam , it wud have been a winner hands down.

Great review Funky..

Noob question, how did you take the screen shots?

Also would you think it makes sense to upgrade from a o2 mini to this one. How is the surfing on edge network (if you could check please).

Good Review. With WM6 you'll notice that the need to OC the processor will be quite minimal as opposed to WM5. If you get a clean WM6 ROM, then you could end up with as much as 33.6 MB free RAM after initial installation.

The TI OMAP 850 can go upto a max of 264 MHZ (as reported by OMAPClock) or 286MHZ if you go by other Today Plugins like Battery Status.

The only time I think you'll ever need to OC is when you're trying to view a full blown DivX rip (600 x XXX resolution and above)

Overall... good buy, but I think you would have been happier with the HTC Touch which is now retailing for 20k. It's a beautiful package.

nice review funky.

i had shortlisted this one for myself but then decided against PDA for the time being.

excellent phone to have.

Yeah, I am aware of that. But I got this at amazing price from HongKong. This one is not local purchase.
I am planning to ditch the P990 which my dad is using for now and get him a new PDA phone soon. Will consider Touch for him.
Otherwise its not bad PDA to have. And like you said you only need to oc if you are planning to play video which is not optimized for PPC. I already have most of my videos encoded for iAudio A2. So I just use them and TCPMP plays them without hitch.

But even at 242Mhz( mild oc using OMAPclock) this phone feels blazing fast compared to XDA IIi which I used for few days having more Mhz on CPU.
At the moment I am using PDAVIET 4.0.0.0.5a WM6 ROM which is the cleanest and fastest rom I have used till date on this phone.

Nice phone, good review.
Quad, why do you think the WM OS is better than that of the P990i? UIQ has enough apps available as well, (which I see you've mentioned), but the QWERTY keypad and the flip rock, IMO.

Well it (UIQ) may have enough apps, but its nowhere near how many apps are available for WM. Basically it's like Windows vs. everything else in the desktop arena.

There are other WM devices that come with QWERTY keyboards which look a lot better than the P990i and are much more spaced out.

I didnt say its better , i just said it was an advantage of that phone.

Since it has a long list of apps.

I m yet to explore UIQ apps , hardly have installed ne apps on it.

But Qwerty kpad totally rocks no doubts abt it.:hap2:

How well does that 1200 mAH battery perform then bro ???

Yeah something around [or higher than] 400 MHz would've been better !!!

Also are Vid codecs easily available ???

Excellent Review man...seems to be a gr8 phone indeed...congrats on the purchase...have fun with the baby.....i'll probably get one of these next year...will it be any cheaper in US?

well i'm currently on a w700i which is pretty decent for my kinda usage which doesn't require any pda functionality as of now...but after seeing these(P99oi,HTC touch & this dopod etc.) beauties i can hardly resist the temptation...

That as with everthing with batteries depends on usage. These devices usually are cabable of running upto 2 days tops without a charge b ut that's on minimal usage. With a resonable amount of Wi-Fi usage coupled with Always ON GPRS and about 3 houra of calls, this would last you about a day.

You can save up on battery reserves by lowering the backlight brightness and by running as few background apps as possible.

Yeah something around [or higher than] 400 MHz would've been better !!!

400MHz is always great on PPCs but this tiny lil OMAP 850 processor is somewhat of a legend. It can clock all the way upto about 286MHz and with a cooler temerature might be able to go upto 300MHz. Most of the times you don't really need the extra speed unless ofcourse you are running quite a few resource hungry Today Plugins or trying to watch videos that arent optimised for a 320x240 resolution.

Also there are a lot of cutom 'clean' roms available and those really take the load off the processor thereby giving you maximum efficieny and speed. You wouldn't know you were working on a 200MHz device.

Regarding codecs for video and audio... I haven't come across a format till date that TCPMP with the codec pack can't play. It's like the VLC media player of the Pocket PC World.

HTC devices are sold in the US mostly through various carriers. You get them for a steal but the catch is that it is always with a plan. T-Mobile, Cingular and Qtek sell HTC devices in America. You can get brand new unlocked phones on eBay for as little as $200.00 depending on the model.

SIM free phones on the other hand cost almost as much as they do here. So you'd rather buy it here and get the 1 year warranty.

i think my phone is better (IMATE JAM).. got it running at 520MHz (OC) default comes with 416Mhz. got windows 2003 SE loaded but runs amazing with 50+ softwares and 25 games loaded on mmc :P supports 2GB card flawlessly and runs hi-res videos flawlessly in media player as well as smart movies. my PPC never hanged.. but i am stil finding a way to upgrade to Windows M 5.0 or 6.0 if roms are available for my phone
