Doubt regarding wireless routers

Recently i purchased an ipod touch and i wanna get wi-fi working at my home. i have an mtnl broadband connection and with a dlink 802-c router.

i have some doubts before purchasing a wireless router.

1. what router is recommended?
2. inorder to have one device do i need a router or router+modem?
 
Since you have a MTNL connection, just talk to their customer care and tell them that you want to upgrade to Wi-Fi. Presently you must be paying Rs.50/- as monthly rental charges for the modem, but you'll be paying Rs.75/- per month for the Wi-Fi modem.

Why buy an addition item and clutter up the space next to the landline handset? I don't know which model and company's modems MTNL are providing these days, but I have some UTStarcom modem which looks like a cheap chinese box, and it has been functioning very well for 9 months.
