well you can mix the brands but not the chips... i.e. nv 40 wont work with nv 42 i.e. 6600GT wont work with 6800 GT... You can although mix XFX 6600 GT with GIGABYTE 6600 GT...

The faster card will just be clocked down.

Actually i think Rel. 80 Drivers are supposed to fix that too.

They should work @ their own speeds now.

^^ Nah in effect the faster card will be bottlenecked by the slower card. Also 256mb vs 128mb is a no go too, even if they work one will be a bottleneck to other.

80 ver. simply adds support for SLI for different vendor cards....means a 6800GT from asus and 6800GT from leadtek can be used (for example).....

But mixing of chipsets.....and amounts of RAM (on the same chipset) is still a no-no...
