Hi All,

Planning to go for the Asus router with Bittorrent client.

Basic Idea was to connect it with esata or USB to an HDD Dock and have a 2tb or 1tb as a HDD for the dock. Thus can shut machine during day times or when I am not using the system.

Was reading about some issues where people suggested that Docks are meant for backups or hot swapping a HDD more than for a realtime use. As docks get hot. For Vantec n other plastic make docks even heard that that heat cozed damaged in long term continuous use.

Want to know if anyone is using a dock for long continuous duration and experience. Or this whole set up is not that bright an idea. Due to shortage of space I dont want to build another rig for download. Thought a dock would be more portable for that.

Anyways would like to get some opinions and experiences.

Get an external eSATA enclosure with fan.. mediahome has some..

You can put a 1-2TB drive... Once its full you can swap it with another one if you like..

Vantec do get really hot on extended use & its plastic may melt... I think Naga tried it & his dock melted...

The dock is a bad idea - for some odd reasons the SATA controller onboard these docks do not last long apart from some limited amount of transfers. A wise member once suggested me to stay away from the Vantec docks since his dock got conked away after a year of usage.

Why don;t you use a 2.5" 500GB portable drive instead? Else get a drive and get the controller separately. Should save you some dough.

Naga's Vantec dock melted? Now that's news! :O

There's another one which apparently went up in flames!

using since 1yr 3months via eSATA & facing no issues *touch wood*
transferred 5500-6000GB already

:S
using 24x7 could be the issue
I use 4-6hrs max at a time

Even I am using Vantec dock since last 1.5 year.... though not 24x7... max stretch was 10hrs... & it was heating up like anything with my old 7200.10 320GB...

Its cheap plastic & not meant for 24x7 use...

@Gannu... don't get excited... I said I think it was Naga... I am not sure, must be someone else.. but I have seen burnt Vantec dock...:P

thanks all

would go for a good esata external drive ... WD i guess...

might be better than external dock and then a HDD
