Need a all handy drilling machine for very rare usage around the home , should i get the ones in ebay or go out and try the hardware shops ,, how much is a decent one? and which drill bits are absolutely essential to have ?
am just going to put some screws in the wall , are there any alternatives to screws?

Do you want variable speed to use the drill machine as a screwdriver too or just to make holes so that you can put the screws in....

I have a drill from a company called and Yking and it has never given me any trouble so far... works like a charm... Single speed... cost me around 600 3 years back...

I have a Powermaxx 600W 13mm drilling machine which I'd gotten through those teleshopping shops circa 2003 and believe me or not, it still works without issues.

WTF, it even has a website dedicated for the tools! :O

http://www.powermaxx.in/PowerMaxx/ElectricDrill/id600.htm

It came with one of those tool kits and although the bundled bits were lousy, I got a couple of bits for metal and concrete from a hardware store and it drills fine without issues. It can switch between drilling and hammering, and has the option to reverse the direction of rotation as well. In all these years, the motor has not broken down.

In any case, I have my eyes set on this one - eBay India: BOSCH 10mm IMPACT DRILL, 400W,VARIABLE SPEED,REVERSIBLE (item 140443290058 end time 20-Sep-2010 11:55:31 IST). :P

PS: I have a hobby of collecting tools and I've been expanding my tool collection since my college days. Have a nice little tool box here at Surat which has almost every other household tool. :)

wow screwdriver option be good too :P does the 600 cover that too?
Nope single speed and its not a weak drill by any means... I have cut thru metal concrete and put on huge drill bits to even a 3/8 inch HSS bit to cut through 8mm thick aluminium.... its very powerful...

If you need a screw driver variable speed drill you sacrifice power and if you need both you pay a lot....

Well you have different kind od drills one is impact drill these are good for drilling wood ,metal.
Then there is the hammer drill which can drill through walls, concrete roof, pillars, granite ,steel, wood.
They further come in variable speed & some with reverse function.

I have a bosch hammer drill been using it for like 14 years touch wood costed around 12k back then made in germany.
Today you can get a similar featured drill for around 7k made in india.

okay , need one for wall ,, shall i just go out and buy it @ 500 rs or so? or you guys can hook some ebay links

^Reliable might as well mean expensive! Like the Bosch model I've suggested. :P

Since it may overshoot your budget, I'd say stick to a not-so-popular one like this one.

If all you want to do is make holes in walls ... dont buy expensive like like Bosch or Hitachi.... its just wastage...

Have you ever seen the tools used by the carpenters, handymen... I have never seen anyone use a 4-5k Bosch.... they use the cheap ones and they just as good... For casual use a normal drill its fine...

i have a hitachi and a black & decker. the hitachi drill is better than most bosch/dewalt models available locally but is more expensive too. As ronnie said expensive drills are not needed for casual use. another very good alternative to chinese stuff is Skil. its a subsidiary of bosch, tool quality is just as good as bosch, only difference i could notice was material quality. its nearly 40% cheaper than bosch.
Official Skil Power Tools Website

^Good suggestion but even Skil overshoots his budget! Not many have heard of this company which is owned by Bosch. I've seen few Skil grinders with the contractor workmen in our company.

okie dokie ,, thank you gentlemen , will just go out and get one locally and if anything goes wrong , i can throw it back at him

I've been using a Chinese-made drill that cost me 300 bucks off the street. It has yet to create a problem - three speed ranges, variable speed, impact and hammer drill and a chuck that goes to 13mm. The chuck is a bit troublesome and the bits sometimes work loose, but an Allen key takes care of that pretty quick.

You should keep a small collection of bits handy. 3mm and 4mm will do pretty much everything you need, and if you get the HSS bits for steel work (cab modding and such) and some cheaper concrete bits for the wall, they'll last forever. I've only broken one bit so far out of the ten or so I have - I buy the most expensive bits I can find, those make a lot more difference than the drill itself.
