I've got a Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200.10 which has warranty upto 2011.....
Lately i kept encountering blue screens with no messages and then i get boot failure....and finally now the disk wont even show up in bios....even windows setup says no disks installed...i also tried plugging it in different sata ports....and i also heard some weird scraping noises from the drive when it was running.....
Any advice as i'll have to buy a new drive and i also dont wanna lose my data......

Time to get it RMA'd i suppose..

I think the harddisk has suffered a shock, and the magnetic axis inside has benn tilted to some degree(the scraping noises part)..

Wait for others to answer

Wat to do???

I'm planning on buying a new hdd from WD with capacity around 500~640GB .......which one's good? I heard green's good but i also got the info that it actually runs at a lower rpm....so i guess i'll go for blue....wat's its price?
After getting the new drive, how can i transfer the data from the other hdd?

It's confirmed....the hdd's not running after connecting to the power...even after trying different power cables....how do i backup the data before sending for RMA?

I've bought a new Seagate 500GB 7200.12.... the 814AS version....

someone pls tell me wat to do about the data in the other disk!!!

^ You cant backup data from undetectable hard disk from BIOS. Only professional data recovery center can recover with huge charges may be twice the cost of hard disk. If data is not so important, forget and RMA hard disk.

finally!!! after shaking the disk vigorously and dumping it in my whirlpool freezer for 2 hours, the disk started spinning...with interruptions in between....i backed up all the data....thanks to all suggestions from my fellow TEians....

Can you provide more info on why it shouldn't be done
This trick worked for OP and he was able to get all the data back without even using any software or recovery services

according to what i read, since cold environment shrinks the metal temporarily, anything caught up will be loosened.....and also the violent shaking of the disk helped.................

Well ,

This Should Not Be Done Because .

1 :Each HDD Has a Breather Hole As all HDD Have Air Inside The HDA Assembly .So That Means If You Freeze it And Take It Out As It Will Rapidly Start Heating Up It Will Create Water Particles " Moisture " Inside the HDA Assembly And There Is a Large Chance The Head Will Go Bad .

2 : the HDD Are Designed To Take Care Of Metal Expansion From Factory Itself .

Why your HDD Worked

1 :Shaking :Well If your hdd was not well before the shaking and then it became its not possible "Reason If The HDD Head is Stuck On The surface The HDA Sindle Motor Will Not Rotate And In Your Earlier Case it Was ."

2 :Freezer : I Do Not Think so

So Why did It Work :

Well You Gave a Resting Period To The HDD And The Heads Might Be Because Of This ,Read Properly On The Internet From Elite forums Like HDDGURU Keeping It In The Freezer is a rumor That Never Should Be Attempted .
