Hi Fellas,

I want to gift my dad a DSLR this diwali. Some models i have short listed are -

Nikon 3100 / 3200 / 5100

Canon - D550 / D650, (you may suggest others)

My budget is 30K. I have the option to buy from Dubai / USA as well.

He is fond of photography (ranging from Nature, portraits, close ups, sunsets, scenic beauty, etc )

So please suggest. He has used a SLR before(Yashika, some 15 years old model, now stolen) & this will be his 2nd SLR.

Thanks in advance.

Canon 650d is a bit expensive at the moment as its a new model.
The 600d with kit lens should be in your budget and the specs are nearly the same as the 650d (except for touchscreen and faster burst shooting etc).
imo go for either the Nikon D5100 or Canon 600D.
Trouble is that you won't be able to afford anything other than the kit lens at that budget but I guess that could be next year's gift :P

Thanks for the information @chiron. Does it make sense buying these models from Dubai/Singapore/USA ?

What is a good price for Nikon 5100 & Canon 600D ? I am ok with the kit lens (will upgrade next year)

The difference between brands is one of user friendliness. Some of the cameras are difficult to operate. I remember the SLR I bought way back in 1987. Nikon was ruling the roost and considered the best. But I wanted a camera which could be operated by my wife and children also. So Nikon was out. I chose Minolta Maxxum 7000, a trend setter in cameras.

I would suggest buying a camera which is user friendly where you can take photographs without any adjustment and also has enough controls for the advanced photographer. Nature does not wait till you adjust your camera. Nor do children.

Do not go by Name. Both Canon and Nikon have outstanding models. Check them out on DPreview.com.

Going by the prices on Amazon there doesn't seem to be much advantage.

The biggest Advantage is if you can get a "Made In Japan" model ...... 'coz the one available here are either from Malasia; Thailand or China..... besides in USA these models come with a better lens (than the standard 18-55) ..... try squeezing in a 18-105 instead.

Thanks for the fill. I am getting the following deal at Ambience Gurgaon -

Shop 1 - Nikon 5100 - Rs. 34,600 - With Kit lens, mini HDMI cable, Nikon Battery(extra), Tri-pod.

Shop 2 - Nikon 5100 - Rs. 32,500 - With Kit lens, mini HDMI cable, Tri-pod(better quality)

Please suggest.

Also need your help in finding deals online - USA/Dubai/Singapore. Tried googling but not much of luck :(

The used stuff on eBay would be preferred if you have someone in the US. So that they can return the product back to the seller, if required. From India, it would be a very big headache.

Also would suggest that you try some photography clubs/forms in India. Many times people upgrade and most of the time the last years flagship would be really worth buying at maybe 50-70% of the price. People who buy these (literally) heavy cameras take good care, so would save you a bundle.

Also confirm the mount-type offered so that you would be aware of what len options are available. Companies like Sigma/Tamron offer lenses at a significant discount to the ones like Nikkor/Canon with ~90% of the performance.

Photography is a commitment, test the waters first with a decent older used dSLR, if you find the hobby interesting - go ahead & take the plunge!

I own a 5100, the only problem with 5100 is no inbuilt autofocus motor. But if you want a SLR for clicking photos mostly..go for NIKON..you can also check homeshop18 for deals you might get it around ffor 30k
