I am currently running Win7 and Win XP on my PC. There is a problem in verifying as where these OS are functioning in PC as when i boot with Win7, it shows Win7 is installed in C drive and winXP in D: drive but when i boot with XP, it shows that it is running in C drive and win7 in D: drive. :S

Secondly, now i want to get rid of Win XP and install Utunbu 9.1 in the drive where XP is currently running.

Pls help me to:

1. Find which OS is installed on which drive and
2. How to install Linux on XP by formating it?

You needn't confuse yourself much. Log in to Windows 7 and go to the disk management tool (Start > Search for disk management) >> Right click on the D drive and Format.

Now, open C >> double click on the boot.ini file and remove the entry for XP
(I'm assuming you have selected SHow Hidden Files and Folders and SHow system files in folder options - only then you will be able to see the boot.ini file)

Now if you restart you will find that the PC boots directly to WIndows 7. Now restart with Ubuntu disc in the tray, boot into the disk, and follow the installer's instructions to install Ubuntu. Take care to install it in the formatted D partition (it won't be shown as D obviously .. just see the data usage in each partition. In the newly formatted partition, it will show 100% free). GRUB will take care of the boot menu so you won't need to do anything. You can easily boot to either Win 7 or Ubuntu after the installation is completed.

I tried to download the d: drive from win7 but it says that you donot have the permission to do this.

Secondly, pls tell if there is any OS specially made for the kids and if yes, what difference does it have other than Utunbu and Windows7.

the best thing to do is backup ur data first... then reinstall windows 7 in c: and after that install ubuntu in d:.... right now ur windows xp is actually installed in c: and u cannot format it bcoz it contains the boot loader...

And as for windows 7 showing that c: contains windows 7.... its wrong... which ever drive u install windows 7 on... that will be shown as c: in windows 7...

its a little bit confusing but i think u'll get the point...

Ubuntu installs "inside" windows Xp and 7. Format D drive, install fresh windows 7 in C drive and then install Ubuntu "inside" windows 7. 4Gb space for Ubuntu is good enough.

hmmm, OS specially made for kids? can you search google for "edubuntu" or maybe "fedora sugar" ? i cant remember right now...

Hi,

There is nothing called Utunbu. Its correct name is Ubuntu which is Linux based Operating System.

Now on to your question, do the following:

1) Where Windows XP is installed, note the partition size and free space. There is a partition editor in Ubuntu, which you can use to delete for format that winxp partition for use with Ubuntu.

2) follow this guide:

Switching From Windows

give special importance to Setting up a dual-boot configuration part.

In case of problems, Post back here.

OS specially made for kids? can you search google for "edubuntu" or maybe "fedora sugar" ?

Thanks for the help. I was able to find edubuntu but was not able to understand Fedora sugar as it was saying that this is a project and was difficult to understand.

So in your view, Edubuntu on Ubuntu 9.1 would be the best OS for kids.

^^ The first one (Karmic Koala) is a stable version. The 2nd link is the Beta version of the latest release (Lucid Lynx). You can wait for some time until the final version of Lucid Lynx is released. Until then, use the DVD downloaded from the first link.

Pls tell if i install Fedora or Ubuntu or any other Linux system, can i install Edubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on it or is this a complete OS in itself.

Secondly, i am not able to understand partition table in my PC. Pls have a look at the image given below and tell me how to solve this problem as windows 7 says that i cannot make any more partitions and nor can i delete the existing partition.

Is there any software present (free) which can do the partitions for me and also install the Linux with Win7.

@rohit, since you are asking such basic questions, please first make an external backup of all your important files and data... because you should assume you will destroy your data by mistake :D

now, you can install edubuntu 9.10 by itself, its an entire OS...

as suggested earlier, just boot into windows and then plug in the USB stick or CD if you write one and a menu should pop up asking to "install edubuntu" on windows like an application... you can try that but PROCEED WITH CAUTION if you are not very comfortable with such stuff :)

Hi,

you partition table is messed up.

1) already have allocated 4 primary partition, hence its not possible to create more.

2) this leaves free space in starting to be wasted.so you need to convert your existing primary partition into logical. to be able to utilize the unallocated free space.

This should help you understand what is a primary partition or other basic things:

How abt using Easeup partition Home edition for doing the partition.

Can i copy the entire partition to other partition and if yes, how?

I am not able to understand the ubuntu style of partition.
