I have Windowx XP 32 Bit installed on my C drive

My D drive is totally blank

Can i install Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate on my D drive as the 2nd OS safely?

If for some reason I do not like the Windows 7, can i just reformat the D drive & revert back to my single XP Os which is on my C Drive or will some remnants be left in the C drive also of the Windows 7 installed on Drive D

Thanks for advising

You can easily install Windows 7 on your D drive, but I'm not sure about uninstalling.. I can tell you one thing for sure. You cannot simply format the partition if you don't like Windows 7. Windows 7 installs it's own MBR and adds the entries for Windows XP in that. If you simply format the partition, you will not be able to boot into Windows XP.

As Sei already told you you can not just format and get back to XP as it changes the MBR. In addition to that it also creates a small system partition (based on some condition) and moves certain system files from your XP partition to this small system partition, making your original partition useless. ;)

you can actually use XP cd to boot and fix the MBR,(you can search and should get a couple of article regarding this),

uninstalling windows 7 from a dual boot - Google Search

how reliable are they, I can not say as if win7 have moved your XP system files to a small partition, your MBR should actually point to the small partition. So better said, unless you are very sure of achieving it

do not uninstall.

Or in first place, if you do not intend to use it don't install.

dont worry, i'm sure you'll like win7 & if you're gonna uninstall something then it'd be XP :P

The problem with me is I am not sure if my stock market programs will work with Windows 7 as officially they are not Windows 7 compliant as yet.

As such if the programs do not work under windows 7 , I would like my XP to work as earlier.

In case even if i do not uninstall 7 & let it remain idle in D, is there any change in the way my XP operates if i choose to load XP every time my computer starts?

Thanks for advising

What about using WindowsXP mode in Win7 (professional or above versions only though).

OR you could also try using VirtualBox and installing Windows XP in a virtual drive for those apps.

No, if the mentioned apps don't work with your Windows 7 installation, you can safely let it be and continue using Windows XP. Windows 7 will in no way hamper your XP experience, except the hard disk space it occupies.

IN that case you can first check whether your applications are compatible with windows 7 or not. DOwnload virtual PC and install windows 7 in it, than install your apps and verify. if they are working fine install win7 else skip it.

For your second query, the answer is yes. You can let windows 7 installed in D and by default boot to XP( a minor setting), and your XP will work as good as before.

hope it helps.

If U Try Installing windows7 With already windows Xp In It, The windows Xp will Be Gone....

actually its the other way around :P

if you install XP when Win7 is already there, then you wont be able to boot into Win7.

dual booting XP & Win7 is best done with XP installed 1st.

Why not create an image of Win XP installion drive and then test with installing Win 7 as dual boot .

If it does not work out with Win 7 , simply restore the partition from image drive .

i do it all the time and do not need to keep reinstalling windows xp
