can i use a hdmi<->dvi cable /adapter to hook a dvd player with hdmi out to a monitor which has dvi in? I've heard that since DVI comes in two flavours, it might not work, and there is the small matter of sourcing the cable .... any ideas?

lcd monitors are WAY more cheaper than LCD tv's . i mean a 20 inch sony LCD costs 25k, and its got 640x480 resolution :|

for that cash,i can buy a 22" pc monitor, tv tuner , and still have plenty cash left over :D

Yeah, but LCD TVs have multiple inputs, high contrast ratio, wider viewing angles and inbuilt TV tuner + sound. Hence they are costlier.
Anyway, does ur DVD player have VGA output as well or just HDMI? I hooked up my Dell E228WFP to the VGA out of my DVD Player and the video (DVD/DVDRip) looks pretty good if watched from some 4 feet away... Will DVI be better? How much upscaling can ur DVD Player do?
Do not take risk since it may happen that you buy an HDMI to DVI cable (which is costly) and it may not be compatible or worse may cause damage to ur costlier LCD or DVD :(
If u gonna attach ur LCD to a TV Tuner (on local Cable TV), get one which gives better quality and high resolution... My Avermedia TV Tuner (3 years old) displays at DVD Resolution, but the quality of channels is all grainy... Looked good on 15" CRT, but doesn't look good on my 22 incher... :@

dude.. iv been pondering over the same question since a long time aswel but havnt been able to get an answer yet.. lets hope someones tried it or has an idea bout it..!!

well, getting a MCE pc for dad proved to be a bit of overkill, and i was thinking if i could get one of them dvd players with HDMI outputs , and hook it up to the viewsonic VG1930
