Hi,

1. Can anybody advise me the ongoing prices of DVD-R DL (8.5 gb).

2. How can i backup my DVD movie's greater than 4.7 gb in size onto a DVD-R Single layer. Will avoiding a few soundtracks, menus etc reduce the size? is it possible ? and ofcourse without compromising on the quality (not even a single BIT).

please help.

regards - Sunil

1) 150-200 rupees for Verbatim DVD+R DL

2) Use DVDShrink. There are a few guides at afterdawn.com and videohelp.com

Backing up a 8.7gig dvd to a 4.7 one will result in loss of quality most of the times if not always. Removing the extra soundtracks, extras, trailers, subs will save you some real estate but the movie will need a bit of transcoding. Most of the time the backed-up movie will be 70-80% quality wise with respect to the original movie.

1.)The last I heard was from a brand called Melody which costed around Rs.200.

2.)You mean you want to fit the entire Dual layer content on a DVD5 disc without the loss of even an inch of quality? Its virtually impossible. Most of the DVD9 to DVD5 softwares available out there have compression applied so as to fit the content on to the single layer DVD.Assuming you want to compress a original DVD9 disc, say King Kong, then you'll have to sacrifice some amount of quality. If it is one of those 7-In-1 DVD's then just separte the VOB files from the disc and divide them into 2 DVD's.Like blade said removing those subs,Interactive menu's and stuff would buy you some deduction but still it won't be enough.

What I do is, If the original DVD is around 8GB, no use compressing it as there would be huge video quality loss. Split the DVD into two DVD's using DVDFab keeping menus on both the DVDs.

If the DVD is around 5-6 GB, I blank-out the extra trailers, features using vobblanker. Then I remove the extra audio and subtitle streams using dvdshrink, select custom ratio and compress the menus to around 50% and the main movie to around 80%. If the main movie compression is about 80%, there is minimal loss of quality and there would not be much difference between the original and the compressed one.

Use DVDShrink. Remove all menus, trailers, extras, etc. Even after this, most new movies go above 6.5GB You'll then have to compress it. You can try one and see if the quality loss bothers you.

The only way to keep the exact quality is to split the files into two.If you don't wanna do this then use dvdshrink to remove all extras, 5.1 audio etc,etc and then use compression software like ashampoo movie shrink. It lets you compress to mpeg4 resulting in very little loss of quality.

You got two option buddy:-
Option A
Buy a DL DVD and make 1:1 copy

Option B
Use DVD shrink to split the disc in two in this way u
dont have to sacrfice ur AV quality. But have to change disc the old way
like u used to do in VCD's Disc 1 - Disc 2...

Its upto u. Like TechHead said head towards afterdawn.com or videohelp.com
for indept guide........
