You will need winavi to rip the dvd.
You can find it here AVI to DVD, 3GP/MP4/PSP/iPod Video Converter, DVD Copy, AVI to MPEG!

1. In winavi click on avi from the menu.
2. Select the Dvd from your Dvd drive and automatically 'Open as DVD' will be highlighted. (It is preferred that you make an '*.iso' image of your dvd and then load it on a virtual drive because this will keep your dvd rom busy for only about 10 - 15 minutes but using the actual DVD will keep your DVD rom busy for a very long time which can't be good for your DVD drive).
3.Below you will see a drop down menu which will help you select the type of output files. Here select 'Merge into 1 file'
4.Now you will see 'Advanced' as an option. Click on it.
5.In the left panel select 'Build-in Decoder'. This is a must if the dvd contains subtitles and audio in more than one language.
6.In the right panel there is a drop down menu. Select your input file. It will create 3 rows if subtitles are present and 2 if no subtitles are included. The 1st row is for Video, 2nd is for audio and 3rd is for subtitles. There will be 2 columns 'Stream type' & 'Stream Select'. Leave the video as it is. In Audio Select 'Stream_1' and see below in 'Stream Information' panel to check the language. Select your language for rip by selecting various streams. In the third row which is for subtitles select the language in which ou want subtitles and none if you don't want any.
7.Now, click on 'AVI encoder' in left panel. In the right panel you will see various options now. Under codec select the video and audio codec you want to use in your avi file. Depending on the codec the inal file size may differ to some extent. If you want to burn it onto cds you can use 'File Split' option and set the size as 701 mb. Video Frame Rate: You can reduce the no. of frames to reduce the size of the file 25 frames isn't bad but keep the original frame rate as fast scenes may look a bit jumpy. Picture Size: Need to a do a bit of mathematics if you don't want to screw the ratio of the video (Use cross multiplication using width/height to find height for your new width or width for new height).
8.Now that you have done all of this just click on 'OK' in the advanced menu and 'Any to Avi' menu. Sit back and let the computer do it's work.
This tutorial is not meant for copyright protected or dvds including regional code. I asked a few members before posting this tutorial and have created this tutorial using their advices as guidelines.

Hope you guys find it useful.

There are plenty of free software available that do exactly what this does and the key word is still free . Winavi is a paid software .

Its not worth the the money truthfully . The only good part about winavi is the speed . but this falls flat on its head when there are errors on the dvd or any other video file .

Agreed plenty of free software and plenty of tutorials too. Here is one which includes open source softwares.
Here is the link for that:
How to rip a DVD: A Tutorial by Elliott C. Back

But are you sure you wanna go through all that hassle.
As for the error bit I haven't faced many so far. Not to mention winavi is one of the best video converters out there and a must have. I use it to convert flvs to avi so that it can be coverted for mobile.

I even managed to rip a single audio track from a dual audio mkv file which included subs. So I do think winavi is a good software for ripping from or converting to dvds & vcds. Or simply changing the format or changing the codec.

but Xilisoft Video dvd Converter to any format is gud and support any format divx mpeg-4, divx and many more :P

also nero recode.... ;)

nice tut!

the best dvd ripping software i have com across is ripit4me. it uses dvddecrypter for ripping the dvd. so u would think y use ripit4me, if dvddecrypter can do the job?? the prob is, dvddecrypter cant handle the newer dvds, which are copy protected.

with ripit4me, its possible to rip such copy protected dvds.

Awesome tut dude... :hap2:

Could have added some tips to improve video/audio quality (like which Codecs to use - If the tut is for n00bs then they would want to know this)

Also can we rip a DVD (of course not copyrighted one) to include 5.1 audio?

Is it possible to upconvert the resolution to say 720p using some software (some DVD players do it so I think our PC can definitely do it)
BTW Repped :P

^ Try Riverpast Video Cleaner for that, upscale the resolution to xxxx*720 where **** will be calculated by the original aspect ratio of the DVD.

Decent tutorial prabs, reps added :)

Good and informative tutorial, although not my first choice in software, I appreciate the work you put into the tutorial.... Thanks :)
