i recently assembled a comp
d945gnt, p4 ht 3ghz, 2gb ddr2, win xp professional sp1
i had a nec dvd writer that i brought from usa
the drive was giving me problems while accessing dvds
so i bought a new sony dwg120a dvd writer
i am having the same problem

explorer hangs while trying to access the dvd
if i use vcds, or data cds or data dvds i have no problem
i use dvd decrypter and powerdvd
the dvds i use are region free and i set the writer to be region 1
i have messed around with autorun options and drivers
i changed the cables and checked motherboard connections
i have no idea what the reason is

if u guys can think of something it will be great

thanks

i have messed around with autorun options and drivers
try undoing the messing u have done to drivers.....
abt the autorum i have disabled autorun in all the cd/dvd drives i have on my system..no problem there...if at all u could not figure out the problem. Remove the hardware & try it with another System...if again it hangs...replace it.If it runs fine in other pc...the culprit must be the os..

Do you just want to playback the movie or are you tryin to rip the movie to your hard drive, not sure if this is applicable to you -

Out-of-region discs hang on playback

Watch the DVD drive's access light while the program is hanging. Is the light still blinking in an access pattern? If it is (and usually it will be), that means the program is still in the middle of decrypting the disc.

Decrypting the DVD involves mounting a fairly large-scale computational effort to recover the key. It is not at all unusual for a computer to take five or even ten minutes to decrypt a single DVD key.

In-region discs never have this problem because the DVD drive firmware automatically decrypts discs that match with the drive's own region.

Also make sure DMA is enabled for your drive.

dma is enabled in my drive
autorun is turned off
all the dvds i rent are regionfree
they all work in my laptop which has a toshiba combo drive set region 1
