well the Liteon SATA DVDROM is already on Newegg and getting mixed reviews. hope they sort out whatever problems they are having when they release the DVD burners

Changing to a SATA inferface for an optical drive won't make any difference IMO. If they expect to charge a hefty premium for essentially no advantage save for a smaller cable, it might not work. Anyone buying such a drive might also have to contend with issues relating to the new technology.

That said, going SATA for optical drives is long overdue. I wonder why they didn't adopt it earlier. But then widespread DVD adoption was also long overdue(anyone remember the region code nonsense and plethora of formats with no media available in the market...hell...DVD DLs are still not easily available). Goes to show that manufacturers want to milk consumers to the max on existing technology and when sales plummet, they introduce something new that should have been done long ago.(another eg: 16GB USB keys are out but here in B'lore we have local manufacturers looting consumers on 512MB-1GB USB keys).

i remember seeing a plextor drive long ago which was sata . i sw it somewhere on the net .

it will only catch on once any of the major OEM starts using it like dell or hp

SATA DVD burners would be great, if not for the bandwidth, atleast they would help with the cooling, and minimize clutter.
