I dont know if this is the right place to ask , I have this board - MSI 890GXM-G65, which has an onboard e-sata port. Now i want to know if i can attach my 1.5 TB WD HDD to this port directly by using just a SATA cable ? or do i need anything else.

You will need a eSATA to SATA cable and a SATA power cable as well. If you are using a dock which powers the drive separately, just the data cable is required.

^Yeah. Notice the specs says that it has a power input through some sort of an external adaptor - Connector Details 1 x 15-pin Power Female.

^Oh! I mistook the previous post. That port with a USB port combined is known as a eSATAP or power over eSATA. Unlike the previous eSATA ports, this one can power the usual 3.5" desktop and the 2.5" laptop drives as well. You would not need an external power source in this case. :)

This is how the port should look like - Link

You are going to need a eSATAP to SATA cable. This one would have a eSATAP male connector at one end and a SATA power and the usual SATA data connector clubbed into a single male connector.

Like in this pic - Link

Tried searching for the cable but couldn't find much info.
