CPU/Mobo E6400 - Request Mobo & OC help

Hi folks ...
Have been lurking around here for about an month and a half I guess and have just about learned that what I need is a E6400 processor with a lil bit of OC.

Now, I know lil to nothing about OC. As for boards, I live in Kuwait where we do not have too many options! First thing therefore is a request to suggest a couple of boards ... with as much details as possible so that I can go hunting for them! To my knowledge though only the Intel 965 board (I'll get board no. this evening) is available ... would you believe only 2 shops have even heard of the C2D and have it in stock!

Next thing ... yeah, I'll need some pointers on how to OC, but since I'm new to this, am a little scared! Therefore, nominal OC will be fine for now! One question I would really like to have an answer to is "Can I OC keeping the normal fan that comes with the processor?". If yes, how much can I take the E6400 up to? ... again, don't take me to the extreme too fast ... easy does it :)

I gues with my conservative approach and fear, I may not OC much and hence a board suited to those need may suffice ... I guess!

Will really appreciate any help you'll can give to a beginner .. a helping hand and a step by step guide :)

Motherboard : ASUS P5LD2-VM-SE , MSI has also a good model, but forgot the no. NOTE: even if you don't go for this ASUS/MSI motherboard, don't go for intel motherboards.

Heat-Sink : the HSF that comes with C2D is below good quality. System will run on hotter side even if you don't OC. Better 3rd party HSF is recomended and MUST if you OC.
Other TEs will give better suggestion for HSF.

the HSF ... I understand that the HS stands for Heat Sink, but what about the F is it for "Fan"?

Will do a minor research later today and will then come back tomorrow with a lot more questions!

The stock fan from intel is not that bad... u can easily clock the E6400 to 2.8 Ghz with sotck Heat Sink.... so no worries there. However if you need to run your system 24/7 at 3.0 ghz and above, than yes you would need a better cpu cooler. All copper Zalman cooler is expensive, I have Artic Cooler 7 Pro which is good enough.
CPU speed is determined as the result of Multiplier*FSB... Now multi is fixed in most processors, thats why you increase FSB and voltage of components to increase the clock. Now cheap and economy mobos dont offer extensive options to increase voltages and FSB's thus provide limited overclocking. However before you OC, you should consider do you really use processor intensive apps?

Thanks for those replies :) Yesterday, I got stuck in a meeting and could not check out the available Mobos :( Nice to know that upto 2.8 the stock fan should be good enough!

I really do not do processor intensive things ... basically, my son uses it for his games (he is finishing his 7th now), daughter uses it for music, I use it for browsing, voice chatting with my brothers in India and well, occassionally editing a picture ... including making some panaromic pictures (I guess that last one is the only one that is really intensive). My PC normally runs 24hrs! At most, while we are moving around the house its kept on as the screen saver is our digital photos and hence we see it as we pass. If the PC is left on overnight it would be one of those rare days when we have to download something big (using a dial up), but thats about it!

With that kind of use, would I really need the C2D or can I pass off with the Pentium D? If you'll folks still recommend the C2D, would I really need to overclock with that kind of use? ... maybe I'll dod a lil bit of OC just to know what its all about!
