CPU/Mobo E7500 + G41 or Phenom X2 555 BE + A785GE: What makes sense ?

Forerunner
E7500 + G41 = ~7650/-
or
Phenom X2 555 BE + A785GE = ~8000/-

What makes more sense ?

I already have -

4gb 800mhz DDR2 Corsair
1Tb WD
ATI HD4670

Please, no E5400.
I need virtualization, to try out MacOsX and UBuntu in VMWare.

Also, will I be able to utilize the onboard graphics and HD4670 in crossfire ?
Will it help in any way ?

Based on my OC experience with this board you can reach 342 * 11 = 3762 on this processor on 100 PCIE.

>>Please, no E5400.

>>I need virtualization, to try out MacOsX and UBuntu in VMWare.

check Intel® Pentium® Processor E5400 (2M Cache, 2.70 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with SPEC Code(s) SLB9V, SLGTK

SLGTK specs does have vt enabled on it and you can check it on the box itself. So you just need this processor with right specs and you are good to go, probbaly you can spend rest of amount in a cooler.

Very easily the AMD combo. If possible, see if you can sell your current RAM and go DDR3/AM3. There isn't much performance difference but future RAM upgrades will be cheaper. You'll get a good deal on your RAM and will likely have to invest very little to make the switch.
The chance of unlocking 2 extra cores seals the deal.

I would suggest the X2 555 and A785GE. More than 90% have been able to unlock to X4 provided they have a mobo with Sb 710/750 and right BIOS.

Multicore will greatly improve performance in VMWare environment. And even if you didnt unlock the cores, X2 555 BE outperforms E7500 by small margin.

Awesome ! Thanks for that info. Could save me a lot of money ! (Repped)

But how can I check the SLGTK/SLB9V specs ? Are they printed on the box ?

Others please do post your views about the combos. :)

Edit: Got two other replies while typing mine ! Am I slow or what ! :P

The replies about the AMD combo make sense. What about the Crossfire ? Any good ? Can do ?

Multi- GPU setups don't make much sense till you already own the fastest single card available and need more performance.

The newer E5xxx series and E6xxx series support VT. Even then, if you are okay with spending a bit more, the AMD combo makes more sense. Otherwise good old G31+E5xxx combo is hard to beat.

Ocing is highly chip(both the CPU and the motherboard chipset) dependent. Results across the same type of CPU can vary a lot, completely different story for CPU belonging to a different series altogether.

Check for particular spec number which would be printed on box...Also it makes sense going for AMD combo..

1- Furture upgrades are easier on AMD platform

2.AMD launching its hexacore processors on its AM3 socket so you won`t need to change mobo..x

3.Also you get better onboard IGP with AMD which is not the case with intel

4.Intel changing sockets every now&then you would have sell out your entire rig leaving very less room for future compatibility with processors&mobo...:)

go for amd rig without second thought:)

n when u have an external gpu then thinking of using both onboard and gpu makes no sense..

and you just can't crossfire onboard and radeon gpu.

think of crossfire of radeon 5970 and onboard GPU....

All points valid. Thanks.

you can CF some radeon cards with IGP. Cards like HD 3450, HD 4350 etc supports hybrid crossfire. :bleh:

Bro, ever heard the term - "Hybrid-Crossfire" ?

@ OP: AMD combo is better if you can go for it !

I *can* go for it ! No issues at all !

How's the onboard IGP on the A785GE ?
If I don't game at all, can I get rid of my gpu ?

Can the onboard IGP on the AMD board do flawless Full HD ?
Will it put too much load on the CPU alone ?

It ll easily handle full HD without ny problem. My exams are nearing, nd ive toomk out my 4870 and is on the HD 3300 IGP and its handling 1080 with ease.

Excellent. Thanks! (Repped for all your help)

What/How good are the chances of unlocking the other cores on the Phenom ?
Does the board /processor batch matter in unlocking ? And is the Biostar A785GE a good board ?

Unlocking success as of now is over ~90%. That biostar board is alright. If possible, get a Gigabyte MA785GMT USB3 for about 5.8k. It will be a bit more reliable and supports USB 3.0 .

@Amien The A785GE is around 3300/- and the MA785GMT for 5800/-

A good 2500/- difference.

Does USB3 alone make it worth so ?

Oh no, not at all. As of now there are no USB3 devices to take advantage of that support.
The A785GE is an AM2+ board that runs DDR2.
The Gigabyte board is an AM3 board that runs DDR3.

I'd recommend going for the AM3 board if you are willing to sell off your current DDR2 sticks. You'd have to add very little to it to buy new DDR3 RAM. The advantage of this fiasco is AM3 will support all new and upcoming AMD processors. Ofcourse, you could always make this switch later since the Biostar board is cheap.

To be perfectly honest, I missed the fact that you already own DDR2 RAM when I suggested the board, so apologies for my bad. But since I've mentioned it, those are your options. Good luck with your purchase.

Thanks. Reps for honesty :P
I don't see the point in selling my DDR2 for a little less and buying new DDR3 for a little more. Will perhaps shell out a 1000/- bucks more in the process.
Adds to the overall combo by 3.5K.
For future compatibility, over a period of 2 years ?
I will probably redo the entire PC by then ! Upgraditis is a B#@$H. :P

^If you already have 4GB DDRII RAM its better to go for the Biostar A785GE ~ 3.3k / Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H ~4.3k (DDRII based) depending on your budget.

Get the 555BE with the Biostar 785GE if budget permits and get a quad :D
Else get a AthlonII X2 240 ~ 2.9k. AFAIK all AMD proccies supports virtualization.

AMD Athlon II X2 240 - ADX240OCK23GQ (ADX240OCGQBOX)

To the point. Thanks Darky ! Budget permits the Phenom.

Almost made up my mind.

Phenom 555BE + A785GE it is.
