This paper trail can be seen by the voter soon after he casts his vote, after which it will automatically sever from the printing roll and drop into a box.

The EC had some concerns over the size of the slot in which the paper trail was to drop, with officials pointing out that it was big enough for a voter to manage a look at details of the last vote cast. The slot is now being made smaller.

isn't a vote supposed to be secret? what's the point of a secret ballot if the machine prints out the choice the voter made?
in probability after all this 8-9k extra cost per machine, the printer wont have any paper in it and the govt would have eaten some crores of this scheme in some new scam or something. to top it they're thinking of getting machines from Venezuela next time.

This is after Dr Subramanian Swamy filed a petition in court that Indian EVMs can be tampered to alter the election results.
Dr. Subrah-maniam Swamy has been advocating a paper trail much like ATM machine, confirmed by the voter while poll workers monitoring, will deposit in the ballot box, which is verifiable in case of a dispute. He had said that the previous elections may have been rigged.

This fact that INDIAN EVMs has been proved by Mr Hari Prasad in his technical paper on EVMs at the prestigious ACM conference on computer security in Chicago, where his paper was selected as the number one paper. Infact he would have done this in 2009 itself when EC had challenged him and was gave a machine to prove its tamperability. As he was in final stage of taking notes ECIL and BEL representatives got panicky and started protesting that Hari Prasad was violating their “intellectual property rights.” ECI stopped them, and told they will give another appointment for which they are still waiting.

But recently he proved it, and instead of praising him, the police had arrested him and had kept him in harsh conditions and mentally harassed him. After seven days, he was presented in the court and the magistrate stated: “No offense was disclosed with Hari Prasad’s arrest; he was only trying to show how EVMs can be tampered with; he is a national hero, working for the benefit of 100 crore Indians.”
Expert proves that Indian electronic voting machines are tamperable

India's EVM are Vulnerable to Fraud

The following are the points is why Dr. Subramanian Swamy is against EVMs

  • The continued use of electronic voting machines in Indian elections is unconstitutional because Indian EVMs are non-transparent and vitiate the requirement of voter control over the balloting and counting process, which is a basic feature of India's Constitution.

  • EVMs are tamperable, posing the risk of wholesale rigging of election results. Computer experts have consistently held that Indian EVMs are not completely secure from software and hardware manipulation. Also, Indian EVMs can be hacked both before and after elections to alter election results.

  • Universal use of EVMs in Indian elections may also be illegal as per a judgement of the Supreme Court of India in 1984.
EVMs have already been banned in many countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland
and Italy, and the list is getting longer.
Thus, there is a growing lack of confidence in EVMs the world
over. Why should India persist with a failed system that has been
abandoned worldwide? The risk of wholesale rigging inherent in EVMs, howsoever small, cannot be accepted
in a democracy where the stakes in winning elections are so high.

Indian Government always wants to implement things that have failed or scraped elsewhere. Like this EVMs or Aadhaar cards. :annoyed:
