Today while registering my new 1Tb hdd on WD site i got confused when i saw that my year+ old 1tb hdd and new 1tb hdd had just 1 day difference in the warranty expiration period. was going to send an email to them when i decided to check the warranty status of the Green drive for India (just to be sure).

nice shock when i see its been reduced to 3 years from 5. my Blue hdd bought 2 yrs back has more days in warranty than the new one

Here's the link WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy and Limitations

Even some of the low quality external drives have just 3 year warranty now.

Maybe all dealers on TE need to update their DO's now to reflect 3 years warranty instead of 5.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

I always thought the warranty was for 3 years only. My WD Blue AAKS 640GB HDD purchased last year, when registered online showed only 3 years warranty.

EDIT: CHecking now, it shows warranty upto 2013. So, I guess my HDD has 5 years warranty. But I remember seeing the warranty period as 3 years quite some time ago.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

This was the only thing encouraging a lot of people to buy WD instead of Seagate 7200.12, looks like its good times for Seagate once again.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

Are the changes being made to existing Green drives with 5yrs warranty as well or is it only the newer Green drives ?

My 1TB Green showed 5 yrs warranty , will have to check again now.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

WD had decreased their warranty period for Green and Blue long time back.

Though some stock was still being shipped out with 5 years of warranty. I got my 640GB Caviar Blue with 3 years.

Going by what someone has posted earlier in this thread, maybe my warranty would've increased to 5 too, I sure hope so.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

Nope, WD still has 5yrs warranty for all internal drives.
check from your link -
"ENTERPRISE, DESKTOP, AND NOTEBOOK DRIVES IN INDIA HAVE A 5YEAR WARRANTY"

just send wd support a mail with your serial no. and a pic of your bill, warranty will be increased. had faced a similar problem with my 320gb 2.5" hdd and got it resolved.
iirc eazy had posted this somewhere some time back

Not decreased for WD640AAKS, still showing 5 years.

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

Whats the warranty period for seagate 500gb drives?

Re: WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series drives

err..

there was rumors of 3yr warranty for seagate too..

i guess it's not for drives being sold in india.

however... some of the external drives from WD do come with 3yr warranty..that has been the case since long.

do check with the dealers though.

Re: (EDIT: Not for India) WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series driv

Sent a mail with a scanned copy of the bill. I noticed the bill does not have the serial number on it. I hope my drive gets 5 years warranty.

Re: (EDIT: Not for India) WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series driv

11 outta 12 of my registered WD 1TB have 5yrs warranty

1 had 3yrs after it had come from RMA but originally 5yrs warranty

Re: (EDIT: Not for India) WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series driv

^ so then i got a sealed rma drive? the sticker on the antistatic bag shows month of import to be Oct 09. nowhere it is mentioned its a rma or refurb piece.

maybe i should return it if warranty status does not change to 5 years. this is the last wd drive i buy. i'll buy only seagate's from now on even if they fail and destroy all my data on them.

that's for spiting me with a fake new drive sold in a new seal pack retail pack. and by fake i mean rma'd or refurbished piece sold as new without any identification on them to tell otherwise that they are rma'd or refurbed.

Re: (EDIT: Not for India) WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series driv

Even mine after I RMAd, it had only 3 years warranty, but after sending the bill copies etc it was changed back to 5 years! :) :)

Re: (EDIT: Not for India) WD decreases Warranty period for Green and Blue series driv

Dude the drive must be NEW, what are you saying. I'm no WD fanboy but I had a 2 year old 250GB WD making noise. I called the tech support described the noise and he correctly said that backup data and recommended it for Replacement. In fact WD service is so good that they sent a courier guy, asked me to seal the HDD with my name and address + token number. The next very morning the courier guy came took the HDD and within a week I got a brand new WD 320GB Green series. WOW now that's what I call service.

Seagate's service on the other hand isn't that good at all. In Mumbai you gotta go to the service centre which is LITERALLY a HELL HOLE. There are llloooonnnngggg lines, the place has no adequate ventilation, the AC's perpetually off, but they do live up to their promise...so thats good. But you gotta haul your ass over there spend a minimum of 30 mins to an hour there. And when your HDD arrives, go back and get it. Too much trouble.

And replaced drives don't have brand new warranty on them, they are considered as a continuation of the previous drive's warranty, otherwise literally you would be getting unlimited warranty.

Besides Seagate has had a really bad batch of HDD's in 2009, my friends 2 500GB's conked it and he lost so much data. Very sad, apparently some shitty firmware issue. You know its ok to lose HDD but not ok to lose the data on it.

BTW I have a seagate 500GB (a good batch, thank god) and a WD 320 sitting with me. Henceforth I'll only go for a WD coz the service is excellent for what just a couple of 100 rupees more.
