If you hadn't guessed from the headline, and as rumored just an hour ago, there's 9-inches of LCD on this thing. Actually, 8.9, but who's counting? We found out that and a few other little tidbits about this Eee PC "New Generation" at the ASUS booth just now, but for the most part the 9-inch Eee PC is quite similar to its 7-inch forebearer. Anything past that ASUS is saving for tomorrow's press event when this laptop will become officially official, but whatever they end up calling it (Eee PC 900 is rumored), it's certainly for real. The battery impact of the new display is said to be "negligible," with 2.5 to 3 hours of battery quoted. ASUS wouldn't let us turn it on since it's all so very secret at the moment, but they did confirm some release details. The 9-inch Eee will hit in the "middle" of 2008, with that
€ 399

(₨24,190) pricetag for the 12GB version, but other capacities available (we saw an 8GB on display).

We know you need it. Now you've got it. ASUS' 7- and 9-inch Eee PCs lined up for a side by side comparison. The new 9-incher is clearly the bigger brother to the shorter original. Too bad too 'cause that chunky bezel on the 7-inch already offers plenty of room for screen-estate growth. You can also clearly see the bigger touchpad and beefier display hinge of the new 9-inch.

EDIT:

From Wikipedia

Asus have announced a new model of the Eee PC, the Eee PC 900. The system, which is projected to cost 399 Euros (499$ / ₨ 19,940), is projected to be available in April 2008 in the US and later in the year in some other countries. It is projected to have an 8.9-inch 1024×600 pixel screen, 1GB RAM as standard, an 8GB to 12GB SSD, a larger trackpad with multi-touch features that allow two-finger scrolling and zooming via a "pinch" gesture, and is "Windows ready". Units on show at CeBIT 2008 were running both Windows XP and Linux, and Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Asus regarding a version of Windows 7 optimised for platforms such as the Eee.

The Eee 900 series dimensions are a little larger than the 70x models. Asus CEO Jerry Shen also stated that future models of the 900 will be powered by Intel's Atom processor, initially they will use the same processor as the 701. He also said future versions will have hard drive options, in addition to solid-state drives.

Nice but I wish they'd stick a larger screen on the 7 incher and give an S-video out.

The 9 incher doesn't look all that big from the pics. The keyboard will offer better usuability but I wonder if it's still as portable as the 7 incher.

in case u havent realised, the 9 incher is the same size chassis (almost :P ) n almost same keyboard too. so portability is the same. Only the side panels along the 7" screen have been removed ;)

I see that but it is kind of weird isn't it? I mean there has to be a difference between form factors. At 9 inches, does it still remain ulraportable is what I'd like to know.

The new pricing puts it out of consideration for a d/l rig though.

no, not wierd, if u look at photos, the original E has these hideous side panels on both sides of the screen containing the speakers. These took up a lot of space. Asus just removed these panels and placed a larger screen :) so almost the same size. so no, portability is the same, n the batt life is also said to be similar :d yay...now if only the price is not >500$ :D

heres a size based comparison with pics: njoi

EEE PC Comes with which OS ? I heard that Asus is preparing their own Linux/GnU OS ?Also Dell is going to launch their Linux based Laptops in India very soon. as they have hit China market with the same ;) So hope there will be good competition .. As Gnu Laptops are of gr8 value ;)

^^EEE PC comes pre-installed with Xandros ! There are few other options available for those with a different taste:

a: EEEdora (based on Fedora)

b: EEubuntu (not sure about the spelling)

Apart from these there are other options like Windows XP or ahem OSX! Also the latest Mandriva Spring RC supports EEE too :)

Dell already has N series like vostro 1400N which come widout os, simply download the dell customised ubuntu from dell's own site..

i googled around a bit. There are a few touchscreen mods out there too. I don't think asus is going to launch tablet models until bigger players enter the "race to the bottom" (as Sony puts it). btw, the 9 incher looks like a sweet deal if they price it under Rs. 20k in India. The 7 incher has a very small screen and is not worth it. You can easily install WinXP / Ubuntu on the EEEPC (even without a usb optical drive if you know how to do a sysprep install or by booting through a pen drive)

Also, just to add, ASUS has already launched a version with Xp preinstalled in japan ;) It ll launch soon in the US too i guess.

Its a custom version of Xandros

but any OS can be installed on it

Its not being sold at that price point for nothing:). Then again I would buy the normal laptop if I need to drop anything more than Rs 15K on it.

It's better than a normal laptop because of it's portability. Just put it in your backpack and use it whenever you feel like it. People are ready to pay twice the price of a normal laptop because of the portability factor. And they are providing the same at half the price.

Except that this new Asus baby is said to have a very bad battery(2.5 hours)
