It has been three weeks i have been in Shanghai and the geek in me could not wait anymore. I picked up my haversack and headed to Xuijahui...the place where the biggest electronics market are there in Shanghai. I did not want to buy anything as of now. Just wanted a know-how of the market, rates and what all do they sell.
So here there are three big malls named Metro City, Digital Plaza 1 and 2
(I will post pics too intermittently )
The glass globe you see in the pic above is the mall named Metro City. Others are around that
Coming to the point..the malls are very very huge and have multiple floors with each floor catering to something specific. Like basement for camera and
accessories, ground floor for Laptops, First for computer peripherals and other things. Next floor for cell phones etc.
Couple of these malls are interconnected and i was damn confused while roaming.
Laptops - Strict no no since all have Chinese OS preloaded and the guys there do not understand English at all.
Cameras - We get for all the brands but i was not much interested as i already have one.
Peripherals - People here literally drag you to checkout stuff they have to offer. You can see people building up their mean machines. One of them at display was like this
Cell phones - Here you can purchase phones of popular brands like Nokia, SE, Motorola, Sharp, Anycall and the local chinese made. But i was surprised to find very less Chinese ones...more of the branded ones are being sold.
MP3 Player/ MP4 player / HDD - These are in abundance. MP3 players are kept like khachra hyeah: HDD are available as the ones we get in India and price is also similar. But i need to find out how much they lessen the price. For eg...for a Hitachi 500 GB 2.5" external HDD they quoted me 750 RMB and for seagate passport they quoted 880 RMB.
*1 RMB = 7.25 Rs approx
Here are some pics of the interior of the shopping center
I was also looking to get hold of the sciphone. You all must have seen the post in the Hot deals section and also one by me in mobiles section. I did not find the sciphone anywhere here
Now my next destination was the subway station 'Science and Technology museum'. Now i have no clue whether there is any museum here or not but there is something that will interest us. Here in the station itself there is a big market with their respective chinese names. But these markets are collectively popularly called as THE FAKE MARKET
And what do the sell...obviously...FAKES !!!!
FAKES of what???? EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN
Yes here you will get clothes of Armani, Adidas, Nke, Bags of D&G, Gucci, Swiss Gear Bags, Wii and PS2 DVDs (i am going to buy these before coming back hyeah: ) And yes lots of watches of Rolex, Swatch and many other brands but all fakes. They also have fake iphones (but no sciphones..god i am becoming obsessive ).
Just for the heck of it...i tried these fake iphones at many shops and the verdict is...CR@P
I could not even get thru the 'Glide to Open' screen.
The other thing that was selling everywhere was the BOSE in-ear phones. I dont know the name but i suppose it costs around 5k in India. Its silicon earbud is white in color and shape of the ear canal. You have to see to believe it...each vendor had more than 20 boxes stocked in their shops. Itna to BOSE ke original store walon ke paas bhi stock mein nahi hoga.
All boxes opened. I checked one of them by plugging them to my w800i (with megabass ON) and what crap sound there was. I mean the sound was just passable but no way near to my EP630 (originals :hap5: )
I asked the shopkeeper if i can click a photo of the boxes but he refused and also panicked :bleh: May have thot i have come from BOSE
Now something that most of the people in India get conned of..the high capacity flash drives. You though you could get a Kingston 16 gb usb drive for 300 rupees...beat this..a 500 G (as they call) pen drive for less than 50 RMB (after bargain)...Lolzzzzz
These guys actually have these in stock displayed and claim that it is the real capacity
Heres a pic
But one thing good about both the markets is that they will mostly honestly tell you if the item is a Fake and will quote less.
But if they spot a foreigner (yes i am a foreigner here ) they up their starting rates. You just have to shamelessly bargain.
Thats my experience of Shanghai electronic market. Will add more if something strikes.
