I bought an eMachines E725 laptop a few months back @ 23K.

First time I bought it, I pressed the dedicated wifi button and it worked. Then never used wifi. I removed the default linpus linux and put ubuntu 9.10 in it. Now if I press the button, wifi fails to start. A local service guy said I need to install drivers for wifi to work. Is it true ? Is a driver needed for wifi ? I could confirm with installing a driver if I had Windows XP but now I can't check since linux has bundled drivers. So I don't know if its a hardware or software problem :(

Yes, you do need a driver for wi-fi...can you look what chip it's using for wi-fi...if you get the make/model of wifi chip then you can search on net for drivers...

A linux compatibility site says that this laptop is fully functional under ubuntu 9.04...
