Embed GPS tracker in mobile phone (any software) ?

My mom (68 years) is going to visit few temples in Rajasthan, along-with relatives/friends.
First time she will be going without us (any of family member)

I want to install a software in her mobile which can work like a gps tracker.. we will call her and ask to turn her location on when needed or she can do same.

Another option is to share the location via Google Maps.

I use google maps to share locations indefinitely among family members. But members have to open Maps app after a fixed period of time to continue updating the location (On iOS especially), otherwise it just shows the member offline.
Is there a way to continue updating the location without having to open Maps?
