Internationally renowned rapper Eminem is planning to hang up the mike this fall after ending his European current tour, according to a U.S. media report.

The Detroit Free Press published a story last weekend that quoted a number of sources close to the Detroit-raised rapper, including Proof, a member of Eminem's D-12 rap collective; Jeff Bass, a frequent musical collaborator; and longtime friend and manager Paul Rosenberg.

"Em has definitely gotten to the level where he feels like he's accomplished everything he can accomplish in rap," Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, told the Free Press. "He wants to kick back and get into the producing thing. Why not bow out while you're on top?"

This sentiment was echoed by Bass, a frequent collaborator who helped Eminem produce his Grammy-winning 1999 album The Slim Shady LP and write the song Lose Yourself, the Oscar-winning track from the rapper's film 8 Mile.

"This has always been about putting food on the table. And he knows the right thing to do to make sure that happens," Bass said of the 33-year-old Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers.

"If that's moving into producing 50 Cent and the other artists he's handling, then that's what it is. He's a smart guy. He knows what he's doing."

Rosenberg, a lawyer and old Detroit friend whom Mathers chose to be his manager in the late 1990s, wouldn't confirm that a decision had been made about the future of the Grammy and Oscar-winning artist. He allowed, however, that the current album Encore is "certainly the cap on this part of his career."

Interscope, Eminem's record company, declined comment.

One of the best selling rappers ever, Eminem shot into the spotlight with The Slim Shady LP and its follow-up, 2000's The Marshall Mathers LP, which won the rapper both international acclaim and widespread notoriety for his explicit lyrics and controversial subjects.

Over the years, he helped launch D-12, a rap collective he had been a member of earlier in his career, and blockbuster rapper 50 Cent. He is also considered a successful producer of his own songs as well as those of other artists.

Eminem has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, releasing his latest album Encore in 2004. He is scheduled to take his Anger Management III tour through Europe starting Sept. 1, travelling through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and the U.K. The tour is scheduled to end Sept. 17 in Dublin.
