Hi,

I m once again here with my doubt of making my home more wireless :bleh:. I want access all my HDD data wirelessly on my HP Laptop and Apple MacBook Air. Playing 720p videos on HP Laptop (whose display is mirrored to my 21.5" display) is one of main requirement.

Devices Available with me : 1*500GB and 1*1TB 3.5" HDD, TP-Link 740 150mbps router, Dell Mini 12 with 802.11g capability

Range Required : roughly 500sq ft

Aim: creating kinda NAS

Options:
1) Buying a SATA dock which can house 2 HDDs and can be connected to my Dell Mini. Taking this whole thing in network
2) sell 2 HDDs and getting one external HDD, hook up it to Dell Mini and again take it in to network
3) above two solutions but coupled with a good router instead of Dell Mini

I tried sharing one of drive of Dell Mini on network and copying a file of 3GB, speed I was getting was around 1.5-75MB/s.

Do suggest me know most optimum solution performance and VFM wise.

these will not let you have hd content over wifi

you need something faster..

Also explore DLNA

axeman : I have Wireless G network and I can easily stream 5-12 GB 720p/1080p rips wirelessly.

I am able to sustain 20-25 Mbps on my Wireless G network.

Well with help of vivek.krishnan i got few more option in solution

1) Seagate Go Flex Home + Gigabit Switch
2) Low power consuming HTPC type PC

Also with my few more searches I could find following

1) TP-Link Gigabit Ultimate N Router which has Gigabit ethernet as well as 1 USB port, comes around for 3700 from primeabgb
2) Raspberry Pi with 2 USB ports and forgetting Gigabit ethernet thinggy. I liked its full HD playback capacity too an all these at mere 3.5W of power consumption

In any case I need to sell atleast one of my HDDs.
varkey vivek.krishnan do suggest most efficient solution. Printer sharing can be skipped for now.

Update: I have got Rs.1000 off coupon from iBhejo.

You do not need Gigabit at all with your current setup. Unless you need more wired speeds which I need in my case, it does not make sense to splurge on it. Also, your wired speeds will be limited to the lowest link speed of wifi router.

If you want both the HDDs to be used, go for HTPC. AMD E350D based HTPC.

3.5W power comsumption is only of the Pi. For attaching any USB device such as a HUB, you need a 1.5A power supply at least. That drives up the cost of the device. Plus 2x SATA USB converters.
