John Carmack recently joined Oculus VR to serve as their chief technology officer, but remained at id Software. However, Carmack found working two jobs quite difficult, and has officially announced his resignation from the Doom and Quake developer.

"I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging," he said on Twitter.

"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," id studio director Tim Willits said in a statement to Polygon. "John's work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id's tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."

John Carmack and John Romero pretty much gave birth to the fps genre and deathmatch.
Traces of id and Carmack's engines can be found in major games being used even today.

I think Doom is the single most modded game out there receiving updates and enhancements on a regular basis to this very day.

Truly a legacy...

The irony is that a grand total of 5 people have actually commented on this topic on TE. Considering how many FPS fans they are here, its really amazing. I doubt most of them are aware of how much JC contributed to the genre they love so much today.

Then again, it possibly just shows how OLD -WE- (those who have commented) ARE! :p

@ameyp, Masters of Doom was brilliant. Great book.
For those interested, its available for Rs.607 from Amazon.in-

It's probably the latter :(.
To put things into perspective, we had already stopped playing CS 4 years before it even became a thing :p.

We had 2 CS servers and awful 56k dial-up connections which were expensive and never pinged below 200ms.
Nowadays I find no less than 30 CS servers each pinging less than 50ms. The Indian gamers today have no idea how good they have it.

@Rickyk
When is Kawabonka coming back and what happened to the VBeing game?

It mainly could be coz there is nothing to comment here about. He resigned and it is sad.
Everyone feels the awe of their game and for me it was wolfenstein 3D.
But one cant expect everything to last. Once THQ split up, it was more of given gaming industry is heavily volatile.

@saumil
LOL true.
As for your question, "never" and "dead in the water" considering the company supporting both shut down 6+ years ago...:dead:[DOUBLEPOST=1387375071][/DOUBLEPOST]@krugur
