Engineering Training question?

Currently doing B.Tech engineering. I wanted to know what exactly does a student do in Summer Training or Internship. I tried asking the students but no one is sure.

Also does the company you do training or internship from depend directly on your branch in engineering or student from any branch can do training from any company?
 
Students write own piece of code / patches etc in Internships.

Most of the companies / Institutes require in the same stream of engineering which related. However some may not care.

Doing internships at reputed institutes like IIT etc will add lots of weight to your profile
