I am looking for an Android phone primarily for learning Android, and also to replace my current phone (it gave out on me yesterday :().

Planning to get the Samsung Spica (btw, is this also known as i5700?) as it seems to be the best considering cost and also since it has 2.1 support?

Just wanted to know if there could be any other contenders in this price/value range? And if there are any problems with the Spica as such?

TIA

Nopes nothing at all in that price range .There is a bug in Spica ,i am not sure whether its fixed in the newer models. You cannot disconnect call using handsfree for some weird reason ,other than this its a beautiful phone under 14K

Getting one is become a PITA .I guess your best bet would be ebay India .THe price is 13.5K ,try getting some coupons( not sure if there are any).

HTC Tattoo, which sucks.

SE Xperia X8, which is yet to be launched

SE Xperia X10 mini, lower resolution though, but with a physical qwerty keypad

Samsung i7500, which is never getting the 2.1 droid update

Samsung i5800, better in every aspect, but has a lower resolution

So, any one can tell spica is really the best. I've been searching for 2 months and am yet to find the phone in chennai.

I would say Xperia X10 mini..

A superb phone with great multimedia capabilities due to android......

I have the phone.

Simply awesome.....

I Really like this phone...

@OP if you want to give a try, why not try Samsung Wave? It's the first phone with Bada OS and this OS does look good actually. Just that it has to get some apps in the market. If you want a good Android phone. you need to spend atleast 20k for HTC Hero. If you can still extend budget, look for HTC Legend or you can search for used Hero which you can get inside 14k.

I5700(Spica) is best in price range. An updated version(i5800) with lower resolution is due anytime, but may take time. Go for Spica if in hurry, otherwise wait for i5800.

How is i5800 an "update" if it lowers the already low resolution ? And yeah, Spica's tiny 128MB ram kinda spoils your upgrade and hack options.
