i have changed my os twice in 48 hours, reinstalled xp pro twice, read many threads on the issue, blahbdy blah blah blah...in short:

complete removal of extra os installs from system, suggestions?

i used tune-up utilities to optimize my system, it asked if i wanted to remove windows messenger, i said sure(i dont use it) and i got this message upon reboot:

blah blah blah, missing, blah, corrupted, <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.......

anything short of formatting/removing the hd,putting it in os compatible pc to doctor would be greatly appreciated.

though this error can occur becoz of many reasons, one thing you can try is, extract same hal.dll from windows setup and replace current on in your system after taking backup.

no you will have to get it from another pc to extract from setup (or i dont have an idea how to extract it in setup). Reinstall or system repair things would do same things but too much to do.

And i hope ur boot.ini file is having correct entries as you were using same system earlier (booted at least a few times)

You cannot get a Hal.dll just from another system. The other system has to be exactly same in configuration(same motherboard and same processor) only then you can copy paste the hal.dll from that system.

To fix this issue the easiest way is to run a repair install of the OS.
Because at times when you manage to get an exact hal.dll file and try to boot you will get the following error most likely

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
windowsroot\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This would occur if at all ntoskrnl.exe has gone bad or is missing.

So this way you might end up replacing many such files as it proceeds further with the files that you get.

So the best I would suggest you unless you are well versed with OS repair to do a repair install.
