Microsoft recently launched an offer in which it will offer users of genuine Windows XP , Vista or Windows 7 upgrade to the upcoming Windows 8 Professional for $40 ( download ) or $70 ( Physical copy ) at Windows.com .
Microsoft explaining in a blog post said,
"You will be able to upgrade from any consumer edition of Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro and bring everything along which includes your Windows settings, personal files, and apps. If you are upgrading from Windows Vista, you will be able to bring along your Windows settings and personal files, and if you are upgrading from Windows XP you will only be able to bring along your personal files. Of course, if you want to start fresh, you can choose to bring nothing along."
Microsoft's post didn't explicitly tell whether the users of Windows 8 Release Preview will also be eligible for the upgrade offer ,
Computerworld noted on page 3 of its own frequently asked questions (FAQ) document on the upgrade offer that Microsoft officials said testers would be able to get the $40 price through Windows.com once Windows 8 is generally available .
Zdnet confirmed this from Microsoft spokesman , who said
"Computerworld got it right. Assuming the customer had a previous version of Windows installed before Release Preview, they’ll be able to upgrade from the Release Preview . "
"They won't need to reinstall the previous version to do the upgrade; they can just upgrade on top of the Release Preview," Microsoft said.
So , once Windows RTM is available , users will be able to upgrade from Release Preview or existing Windows to Windows 8 Professional using Windows.com ,and then the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will guide them through the upgrade process . Users upgrading will also get Windows Media Center as free download .
