Hey,

Have a 80GB hitach External HD....today i noticed that most of the files in one of the partition were renamed...renamed to some wierd charecters....there were boxes, there were arrows, all kinds of ancient egyptian charecters :) .... all the movie files were renamed...windows could not recognize the files....i tried file recovery s/w...that didnt help either....
i tried copying the 'good' files to another drive...guess what happens...the other drive gets corrupted...totally i have lost about 50-70 movies (Lost American Pie..complete series :( ) ..

i have scaned my HD for viruses, but nothing to be found(guess even the viruses must be corrupted :D )...and yes, i have recently updated my Virus Defs....I had accessed the drive two days back...was working perfectly...i had unplugged it safely...i seriously can't remember what wrong i have done to offend the HD :)

Dont know whats happening...someone please help...otherwise i'll have to call a 'mantrik' to ward-off evil spirits :eek:hyeah:

seriously, whats wrong with my HD..please someone help me

the weird characters thingy generally happends when ur hdd gets corrupted but no idea wt happened when u copied stuff to the other drive...

try another HDD data cable. Also check that the
Data connector pins on the HDD and the motherboard are clean.

When I saw this problem on a HDD a while back all the data was fine when I changed the HDD DATA cable, no DATA was lost.

Dude, i am using an External USB-HD...Sorry, if i forgot to mention it earlier....Can it be an issue related to casing... i mean a bad casing resulting in a faulty HDD....

What astonishes me is that when i copied data from the corrupted partition to the other partition, the 'i-am-a-good-boy' partition gets corrupted....why is that....

Hard Drives and politicians, all walking the same path...the corruption path...:D

Along the lines of what Easy said, maybe its a connector thing, if you can remove that drive and connect directly via IDE or SATA whichever it is.

This will remove the possibilty that the drive may be faulty.
