Hi, I am using a WD-My Essential 320gb external hard drive. It had almost reached capacity when accidently it fell down in the morning.
When I picked it up, I could see panel gap in its casing, tried correcting it but it gave clicking sounds but did not fix properly.
In panic I checked its data situation & thankfully things were working fine.
I can still the gap in its panel though from which inside contents of the disk can be seen.
1) Now, should I get in touch with WD service & ask for replacement? I could always tell them that this is how it came out of the box!
Later I got a 320gb Transcend Shock proof HDD & quickly transfered data to it. I first tried to back it up but Vista says that contents of "C" would be backed up simiutaniously. This could not happen because total data crossed 400GB.
2) Then I copy pasted the contents from WD to Transcend. It did take time but is it the right method or should I have adopted some diff. approach?
Later in the day, I set a few torrents downloads on remaining portion of Transcend. After about 1-2% download, they showed Data Error - cyclic redundancy check. This was related to HDD & not u-torrent.
3) Does this mean the new Transcend is corrupt or copying files caused this?
What should I do should I defragment the new disk & convert it to FAT32?
For future I've thought of backing up all the data (Comp + WD hdd + Transcend hdd) on a 1tb HDD.
Also suggest should I transfer data from HDD to DVD's & keep the HDD free for further use?
How much does a DVD cost & how much data can it accomodate?
