I was wondering whether to go ahead with a normal external HDD or a Normal HDD with an external Casing....since i am a noob on this....can somebody throw some light on the pros and cons of these HDD's....

Cheers

I too was about to start a similar thread.... Techies please reply....

Which one of the following is better?

1.Normal Ext HDD (Seagate Free agent,as it got 5yrs warranty)

2.HDD+casing(Transcend Esata)

3.Doc+HDD

The HDD must be very reliable. No Plans to take backups(In DVDs) other than HDD.

HDD will never be moved(No traveling,Max once in 6 moths). It will be connected weekly once and data is taken backup.

@ lomac 29 :- Hey thanks for the reply, but what i was looking for are the pros and cons...and not just a generic choice......NOM

These are what i believe

External

Pros :

  • Better Warranty - Most cheap covers come with no / crappy warranties , this way you get warranty on the casing too
  • No hassle of assembling , just open , plug and play

Cons :

  • No choice of HDD
  • Usually more expensive than HDD + casing individually

Internal + Casing

Pros

  • Your choice of HDD , say you can buy the Seagate 7200.12 / WD 640/750 AAKS - however unless you go for eSATA , USB will bottleneck your speeds
  • Easier to detect problems by opening up the case if you want

Cons

  • You have to assemble yourself
  • If you buy cheap casing , it can go kaput

I bought a 3.5" HDD + 3.5 case (Zippy - is that a brand?) from Nehru Place a while back. Running great. I would personally go for HDD+case, no need to pay premium for external disks.

Though the sunbeamteach HDD dock available at prime, looks like a very good option. Its for Rs.2190, a good one time investment IMO, though only if you plan to use multiple HDDs.
