Storage Solutions External Storage Device not recognised

Hi!

I have brought a new extrenal 80gb usb mass storage device, with transcend cover.

i used it for once and i stored some data, now when im inserting it, it's not getting recognised and i couldnt able to see any icon in my computer.

i want it to format and create partition's,

so plz help me abt how to do all these, first i want it o be recognised.

try changing the USB port and the wire...
and i would suggest u also try to plug it in some other pc.. to check if its wrking or not

For formatting and partitioning...

Go to Control Panel / Adminis Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disk Management

Here look for your USB drive and if it shows up right click on it and select format. If it does not show up in the list then click on Action Menu and select Refresh.
 
can u feel some vibration on the outside of it when it starts to spin?
what make / model is it
Or
are u using an ext casing for HDD.

i guess the maxtor comes with a firewire also so u can check if it working over Firewire
