For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family,†Zuckerberg said in the post. “Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.â€

Zuckerberg went on to say that the company will be building on Instagram’s strengths and features and growing the app independently rather than “just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.â€

Instagram had just 12 employees !

but what was main business motive to buy this ?

They have a basic photo uploader which does not do much . with the booming smaprtphone sales & the no of users for instagram . It makes the perfect app to buy . They dont want to completely integrate instagram into facebook because it only works on phones .

^They could have just created another app like Instagram. As #[member='goodakash'] mentioned may be it's because of user base.

You guys are missing the talent part..google has been doing this for years.buying startups for new ideas and proven talent.then they assimilate both into google.!its a fight to bag the next big ideas and top level minds for the new web economy!

^yup... another valid reason. From Youtube to Android, all were developed by other people... And Google bought it..

and Google's in house products are failures ?

Google Answers

Google Videos [it's not Youtube buggers :P]

Google Wave

Google Buzz

Froogle

Google Plus [?]

Only these I can recall as of now....

EDIT :

Instagram has nothing special to add.....there are many other apps which provide better effects

But Instagram was adopted as new social media platform [its like flickr ,for mobile] and got millions of users in little time...

its rapid growth as a new social network is the reason why Fb must have bought it........now Fb will come up with instagram-fb integration or something like that

maybe facebook wants to fight with picasa (google's photo sharing site??) head on now by giving fb users more control over photos etc?

just guessing as all of u guys

At first, I thought that instagram was a cool app, etc. Later on, ditched it, uninstalled.

Anywyas, to #[member='avi'] AFAIK, the stuff you posted as maybe flops is not true. They have been integrated into other Google products, AFAIK.
