Hello admins,

I seem to have noticed Facebook inspired like button in forums.

Now, this surely is an idea copied from facebook, While this like button works pretty well on social sites. my question is:

What is the point of having a like button on forums?

Hover your pointer over a post and check the bottom right corner of that post (just above the signature line).

Can there be an icon on permanent basis instead of appearing only on hovering ?

^Not sure, have to check with the admins. I myself saw it now only. Though right now it looks a bit funny. We'll look into it :)

Some sites also have a "dislike" button, that will be fun :) Like on youtube videos/comments, some blogs/forums etc...

So is this Like button only for liking or does it have any real function like repping?

Well guys don't turn this into a social forum now, please get rid of the like button, and if you do NOT, then leastwise please don't introduce the dislike button.

No matter how much ever I 'hover' on any post, I still don't see the 'like' button... :@

Probably, the 'like' button doesn't 'like' me... :(

Seems @cranky likes all posts

seriously, whats the use of this stupid feature? do the stats of the "likes" get published somewhere or what?

@nehaladsul, its just a cm above the multiquote tab.

Edit: :P

The potential use of this button would be to identify a useful post among OTs and useless junk. Click on the like button at the top of the thread, and you get a dropdown telling which post has received how many likes. Click on that and you are directly taken to that post. THe only problem is find is the possibility of rampant misuse of this feature. Especially possible because a lot of new members belong to the social-networking-addicted generation.

^^ As logistopath said, the idea here on TE was to build a database of good useful content within a thread and then allow a new user to quickly go through to that content without having to see in between by using the main navigation selector.

Over time, when there are enough posts, we will also show who has "top likes" and which thread/posts received most likes.

Again, the idea can be misused. The feature is experimental and i am trying it with best intentions :P I think a long time back, something i have heard on most forums, including here, on FE etc; people were saying that reps had lost their meaning as almost everyone had achieved the maximum length of rep bar and the motivation for achieving more had been lost. Now whether you agree with the idea of "motivation" or not, the idea now is that "Likes" are the simplest and the easiest way for what you post to be appreciated.

PS: the feature remains experimental right now. If i see its not being used as envisaged, i will disable it.
