How about using "Facebook connect" in this forum? this way 350million users of facebook can become members of this forum without registering. Just directly login without facebook account, no need to register.

For those who don't know,
Facebook connect is a OpenID service by facebook. so on partnering websites, you don't have to register again. just use your facebook account to login. no more nagging registration form to fill.

I have tried the same on other vbulletin forums using this addon, works pretty good. I was wondering if that can be implemented here as well.

No, this system won't let automated bots register. so this won't increase spam. as a additional benefit you would be able to share your posts made on TE on Facebook as Facebook stories
 
Ah nope.. I prefer FB and TE be totally separate. Otherwise there would threads everyday asking 'Who is a fan of Britney Spears?' , 'Who likes chocolate ice-cream?'! :D

How about using techenclave as a tech forum rather than jack of all trade website?

How about making such recommendations at funenclave rather than converting techenclave into funenclave?

How about we keep this things as it is?
 
^^ Sorcy has a point, FB is a social networking site, and TE is a tech related forums. Most of the people wont know what the discussion is about except for the TE members :)

But yeah, its not something which can be dismissed easily, will let the admins do the talking :)
 
err, i dont wanna see TE filled with spam.

it will be like implementing pm limit and negating it with encouraging social networking. the servers are already busy enough that they have to put 60sec time limit between consecutive search requests...i wonder how much would i have to wait to load TE when even a fraction of those '350 million' users make search requests...!!
 
Hey, at max maybe they can put their facebook profile link under their "additional information" on member's profile, but nothing more than that is just plain wrong. But do people even make efforts to fill up their profile? If existing resources are not used, why implement new ones?
 
Man, I didn't knew there are so many facebook haters.

anyways,

guys is not about converting tech forum into a general forum. focus will remain the same and so does the topic of discussion. nothing changes much from present users point of view. I TE will still remain to a tech forum:D

have you ever cursed that why you have register on so many sites? then go through trouble remembering username and passwords for each site? Atleast I wished, there was a common id which I could register once and all sites would honor that. OpenID systems like FB connect are the answer to my wishes. I know this is a new concept for some of you, there might be some concerns. I myself have implemented this in 4 vbulletin forums. just after implementation, the traffic increased 25%. most were genuine users who are active and its no of queries and contribute back.

Lastly about the concerns:

1) There is a minimal Integration option available, in which facebook and this site would be completely Separate. no won't will be able to Open your FB profile just by clicking your TE username. just that you would be able to use it with common login. even it allows you choose a separate username.

2) Present Accounts remain unaffected by this. no change for current users. so don't use if don't like:P

3) New users will have a option to register on forum by Vbulletin registration system or by facebook connect. so its a addon not a replacement for registration. an extra option

Lastly, even biggies like Yahoo have started using Facebook connect. so even its bound to get more popular and soon you will see more sites implementing this into their logins system.

These were my views and I feel implementing this login option would be beneficial. Final say is on Admins.

I would still say NO NO NO NO NO.

If admins wanna integrate it ,please change the forum name to Junk Enclave.Members will start thread's for Farmville,Mafia Wars etc:@:@:@..,
 
A Big NO from me too. We have seen what a few new members from sites like Digit can do to TE, Can't even begin to imagine what facebook users will do.
 
No from me too.

TE registration makes the member aware of the rules, the website, the theme, the goal. Thats very important.

Now FB is totally a social timepass in which 80% people are not interested in Tech stuff and more interested in Celebrity/funny/quiz/farming etc. So, FB is totally irrelevant and hence a spam for TE.

Integrating OpenID for TE would be awesome ( 1 less id to remember ) but we need not have FaceBook integration for that.

If TE ever implements facebook connect and i see spam threads coming, I am sure i will leave this place. :(
 
Not a facebook hater, but thinking of implementing what the OP has suggested or anything of similar manner gives me a goosebumps :P

Implementing this on FE is also not a really good idea but i leave that to the admin.

Common login is a really bad idea imo. For any site for that matter.
 
@gaurish- the idea is wonderfull, and i would support it for any other site except TE :P

The problem, is you dont play cricket with balls made of gold cause they're simply too precious to experiment with..:P
