Recently the rumor mill has been churning out news that Facebook might be looking into buying out Whatsapp, the uber popular texting app that works over the internet. Meanwhile, Facebook Messenger for Android gets an update which doesn't require you to have a, well Facebook account to use it any more. But Messenger will retain the Facebook tag, which might lead to some confusion. Read on.
Facebook Messenger for Android
After the recent update to Facebook Messenger for Android (available only for select countries), you can now use the app with nothing more than your name and phone number only (similar to what Whatsapp does). The current list of countries include:
Facebook says that it will be expanding the list of supported countries soon. We bet people from more and more countries are eager to try this feature out.
The new update incorporates your SMS/Messaging into the app. Facebook wants it's app to be the one-stop-destination for all your messaging needs. Well for that we first want the Facebook name gone, because we simply can't live with our messaging icon to become Facebook messaging, no! Facebook for iOS is expected to receive the same update in the future, although no definite time frame has been set.
Meanwhile, the Facebook app for Blackberry gets updated and now comes with BBM integration. Sweet (for the remaining BB users that is). Facebook is on a roll, and we wanna see what's coming next!
