I recently replaced my old HDD (Seagate 80GB 7200 RPM IDE)with new one Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM SATA (ST3500418AS)

I use the speed fan S.M.A.R.T. to check my HDD status it shows fitness & performance of my HDD above 92-93%

but now for past 4 days its fitness keep reducing and now it's at 29%
though the hdd is working fine
there is some performance dip but overall hdd is working fine
(this problem first showed up after power-out)
techenclave - Google Docs

but the seatool test results says my hdd is fine

the power supply have no sata power connector
the hard drive is connected with a "molex to sata power" connector(it's safe to use this in long term???)

why this "reallocated sectors" is changing so rapidly???
one week ago reallocated sectors were 102(now 356)

hd tune health status:

is my hard drive failing??
please help

Verify your data cables first. replace with new one and see.

more over molex power connector also could create pblm, some times short cut would be there, if you are using low quality molex connectors.

7300.12 series never had aby pblm..

You would do well to list your system config over here. Make sure you mention the PSU too. I have had a gradual HDD deterioration problem before which was fixed after I replaced the bundled PSU.

Your reallocated sector count (Current) is still well above threshold... If that starts decreasing then you would be in trouble... Don't worry about data values 'coz it simply shows the amount of data on your reallocated sectors...

The threshold for reallocated sectors is 36 below this you will be in a data loss situation...

this PSU is enough. it can handle your power usage.

but incase if psu have any power short or something. do you feel shock in your CABINET? ..

better keep a branded PSU, we can't expect how the local PSU's vl.. or u can get a normal PSU with SATA power connector.

Zebronics have 450W series, with 2 sata power connectors. try that.

vl come for around 400 rs.

If you enable SMART in the BIOS its going to take toll on your disk performance. Though SMART gives you an early warning before a disk fails, it cost you in your disk performance degradation. Turn Off SMART in the BIOS and you will see your disk performance increase, but not at the cost of your data. So you are the decision maker.

Your bundled PSU could be a problem. 450W is not everything in a PSU. Those bundled PSUs are not very correctly specified and are usually of poor quality. If possible borrow a decent PSU and use for a week and see how things go.

Don't turn off S.M.A.R.T if you value your data. It is the only way you will know beforehand that your HDD is failing.
