My airtel phone got stolen a few months ago, and got it deactivated. They wouldnt give me a SIM from chennai, had to go to tvm.
Finally, I get dad to go there, and they say that I can't reclaim that number.
Its not assigned to anyone, but I can't have it either.
I'd had this number for the past 8 years, nowadays was just paying 400 rs a month just to keep the number active.
When mobile operators are trying to retain high ARPU users, they lost a die hard, loyal user to Vodafone.
It takes a special level of apathy and incompetence to do something of this level.

Any idea what can be done ?

How much time had lapsed when you had got it deactivated?
And didnt u asked for an immediate reissuing of a new sim with same number?

My post would not be helpful to you but I wold like to post my rant:
I was Failtel customer since '07, it was my primary number. I used to renew my number validity every year for marginal amount(some 20bucks recharge). In 2012 when the validity was about to get over I approached them and asked for lifetime validity option, they didn't have it for my number and now this time even the yearly option wasn't available. They suggested me to do recharge of 90 something bucks every quarter to retain the validity. No way I was gonna pay them 270 bucks a year just for the validity :mad44: ... Ported to Vodafone next week got lifetime validity and its coverage has been better then Failtel in my area ...

I'm surprised they accepted his payment, is the best thing left just to get a refund on that payment.

They cannot hold onto the payment AND deny you the number.
