Storage Solutions Failure rate for 1TB & 2TB HDD

Hi,

My 2 year old 500GB HDD is failing and in market to get 1T or 2T drive. If I remember correctly, more than a year back, failure rate of 1T & 2T was pretty high and I am sure that the situation is improved now.

Any suggestions for buying 1T & 2T drives. I like to purchase an internal and an external drive.

It has been my observation that higher the capacity, higher the failure rates for drives. I personally do not advise 2TB drives yet...

Please share details of 'higher capacity drives' = 'higher failure rates'

I've been using 2TB drives for quite a while now, and has lasted without issue, longer than my 1Tb drive. (both used for backups)
 
My 40Gb and 80 Gb HDD never crashed in their life span of 8yrs and 4yrs respectively and my two 1Tb's have crashed 2-4 times in a span of 18months.

^^ I said it was my observation. I have seen larger drives fail more often than smaller drives.

That doesn't give you a right to prosecute me just coz you did not have a failure on a larger drive.

^^ #Vince this is exactly what I meant. I still have a 6 year old Samsung 40GB PATA drive going strong and a 7 year old Samsung 80GB PATA going strong.

That apart, a lot of the drives in my school have been working great for the past 5+ years. All are 160GB drives. I know coz I had configured the systems!

But my friends have lost 1TB and 2TB drives like anything! One 1TB crashed within a month of having installed it.

Again, it is my observation and not a general rule...

Have 1x 2TB and 3x 2TB. All Seagate.

None of the drives failed on me, but the 2TB bought in June started making some noises. Got it RMA'd after backing up the data on a newer drive.

IF you plan to by a new drive now, for data storage get a WD Green. with the 2 yrs warranty, it would be better than the Seagate ones with 1 yr warranty.

If you plan to use it to do OS installs/If you need a fast drive, go for the WD Black. It comes with 5 yrs warranty.
 
2x1TB, 2x1.5TB, 2x2TB. One of the older EACS drives failed in 1 month, its replacement was a refurb that failed in 1 week. WD replaced it with a EADS drive a few years ago.

Not a single other failure yet.

The 4 of the largest WD green drives are connected to a machine that lets them deep sleep for long periods of time.

Oh yes, most my drives have the 5 year warranty.

In short

Green = eco-friendly = low power consumption = low speed (performance) = good for backup, music,video dump

Black = not eco-friendly = regular power consumption (maybe a bit more) = higher performance, = good for OS, gaming
 
3x1TB, 1x2TB, 2x1TB ext, 2x500GB ext, 2x160GB ext.

Out of these, only one 160GB HDD seems to be failing, and that too due to blunt-trauma caused by dropping it a few times.

Almost had an aneurism when my 1TB internal lost ~50GB of data...but that was a chkdsk cluster****.

the truth is, there is max 3~4 w difference between the greens and the normal/blacks. SO leave power consumption aside and look for reliability and performance.
 
Using 2 TB external Seagate. Working good so far.

Also using 1TB external WD , Not used much but working good.
 
I am planning to buy 2 Tb or 3 TB external suppy HDDs for my Asus Mini R1...

I am not sure it will work on that or not ?

Please suggest.
