NEW DELHI: The New Delhi district police claimed to have busted "a racket selling counterfeit Kingston pen drives in Palika Bazar". Strangely, sources claimed that cops had first received information about the racket around two years ago but did not act.

The police claimed they busted the racked Vimal Kak, an authorized representative of Kingston Technology, approached them. Hundreds of fake pen drives were seized during the raid. Three persons -Vinod Kumar, Amit Kumar and Tanuj Sharma - were arrested in the case.

Ha! Just hundreds of fake pen drives seized? What about the thousands that are still in circulation and freely available all over other grey markets and online stores? I smell a hasty scapegoat plan here. Set up one such person, maybe throw in a 'whistle-blower' and the lousy, lazy, corrupt police have a case on their hands.

Catching the source is far more effective. There are times distributors can't verify if a product is genuine, let alone dealers. Not that I am "accusing" disributors/sub-distris or dealers, its just that its not possible for them to verify each and every product due to time constraints and competance level amongst certain personnel. Pretty sure those 3 will be bailed eventually with this possibility, so all the more reason to try and locate the source of the duplicate stuff, rather than dealers.

There are numerous such pen drives available in the market. I have seen fake 32GB ones from Kingston for some Rs. 800. The package look entirely legit. After a format, the capacity reduces to a few MB.
