Hi,
I've never owned usb drives before and I want to buy a couple now. I want to try installing linux/xp into them and/or use them as installation sources for the OSes. I would need two drives of 1GB/2GB/4GB capacities in a budget of 3~4K. Any brand/model I shud avoid and any model that would be fast?

avoid transcend cheapos (v20 and v30) like a plague.....

get tanscend v120 if u can find it

next best wld be sandisk cruzer

last imo is the kingston data traveller (these depend on stocks...i've personally seen some kingstong give good write speeds ~5MBPS and some give ~1.5 MBPS)

cost is nearly the same with decreasing cost as the mentioned list except mayb the v120 costing a bit more....dunno....dont own 1 of them

hope that helps

oh yeah....the cost last time arnd i checked 2 weeks ago for the sandisk 2 gig was 930 something IIRC and 1 gig was 550

Thanks deepak. That's what I wanted to know. Is there any more brands/models I must look out for? Just trying to expand the options to accomodate for availablity.

Try to get yourself Corsair Flash voyager or Sandish cruzer 2 Gb will cost you nearly ~1.5k and 4 Gb will cost you nearly 3-4 K ~ and if are going for 4 Gb model then go for the Kingston data Traveller .. Stay away from slower transcend :O

Get the Kingston 2GB DataTraveller..I think it costs around 850/- bucks.

The read speeds are pretty good at around 11MB/s and write at around 4-5 MB/s (Don't remember) is decent enough..Moreover, the 5 year warranty is just bliss..:P

^^ Would not advise the Kingston DataTraveller....I got one for me in FEB and already its replaced once since it went kaput.. Also the transfer rate is not impressive. It was approx 5 mb write / sec and 8-9 mb read / sec. If u can get ur hands on the DataTraveller 2 well then good.

Last week I got SanDisk Micro Cruzer with U3 Technology , what an amazing FAST thing it is. Its excellent and very fast . Giving me 7mb/sec write and 15 mb/sec read. Nothing in comparision to the ultra fast Corsair , but well thats the best 1k can get u :)

Edit : Sandisk comes with only 2 yrs warranty - not heard of issues with sandisk drives. But after the Kaput Experience with Kingston dint want to go for a secodn kingston drive , however the service of kingston is good , 10 days flat replacement no questions asked.

^^^ only 7mb/sec ? heck Transcend 120 is faster .. get that,Sirius!

I'll be getting Corsair Voyager GT from the US :D (2GB , 21mb write speed and 35mb read speed :P )

i guess transcend is the cheapest 4GB one at arnd 1700-1800....prices not confirmed though...

personally i found both the kingston DT n transcend v20 n 30 to be sluggish..speed being too low...if u try n copy a large no. of files say arnd 1000 small files...u can even take a 10-20 min nap n come back to see the transfer still happening...

stay away from v20, v30 n kingston DTs...

i second what deepan n hanzy said...get the sandisk cruzer u3 ones...or transcend jetflash 120....

the best thing is to just ZIP/RAR/compress many small files in a single file which will be much faster(while transferring to a flash drive) than copying many files at a go .
