What //was// I //thinking// about.com?//!//?

Tim Berners-Lee, the "father" of the world wide web, has told Brian Runciman from the British Computer Society that he really wished that he had not invented the double slash for addresses.

Berners-Lee said that after 15 years of Interweb development he really regretted having such a clumsy address system.

He said that if he were designing the whole thing again he would dump the double slash as there was no need for it at all.

He would also have put the domain name in reverse order. So you would be reading http:/net.theinquirer/news.

Although we can see that the double slash is a pain in the bum, we're not sure how effective the last change would be.

You can read the full interview here.

Well, i guess its pretty late:P
Majority of the people are already used to the //....
But, had the double backslash not been there, i guess things could possibly have been different.
But then again:D Who can say what wold happen if the domains were reversed??

All speculations;)

I guess then we all would be wondering why we were not using a double slash;)

I Like it the way it is :D.
Double Slash looks better :P.
Also, name.com/main is better than com.name/main Lol.

Reverse order domains would certainly be more logical, and maybe there would be a minimal reduction in the load at the domain name server for each query ...

BTW, the rest of the interview is a bit more interesting.

in the DNS world, domains are already considered in a reverse order (logically)
Exactly and it would make sense too to have the 1st level of branching first, and so on in the representation.
